Summary0002526: Make Zenith traders be a little more likely come to player worlds
DescriptionMe and a lot of players have been complaining about these. With the very low chance of a trader appearing on a player planet, even if you manage your position between AI worlds well, it becomes almost exclusively a bonus for the AI. I can think of two ways increase the chance of the trader visiting a human world without bringing it to the sillyness of the old pathing system.

1) Add a SMALL chance of it choosing to visit an human world instead of an AI world. This chance should be very small, small enough that average time between it choosing human worlds is like 2 hours or more, but still better than never choosing a human world and only going through your world if it is in the way.

2) Make it just choose a world at random each time, ignoring AI or human status. This would increase the chance by a good deal, but in bigger maps, not by much.

If neither of these sounds good, could you at least reduce the cost of the goods offered? The prices now were balanced for when the trader showed up often, and now it doesn't, and such it is not worth the risk of building it anymore.

For suggestion number 1, maybe an average of even once every 5 hours, or even more. Low enough such it doesn't completely destroy your reason for this chance in the first place.

Fine...

* Zenith Traders now path randomly between any planets, not just AI planets. That still means they will be a lot less likely to visit you in the start of the game, but it also means that they have a chance of visiting even your homeworld again (even if it's in a dead end), though the chance is way smaller. The longer the game goes on, of course, the better the chance. And if you wind up controlling most of the planets in the galaxy, the trader will spend most of their time on your planets.

Sorry to bug you, but the players have spoken. ;)

Thanks for compromising a bit on this though. It should help make people turn on traders again but still fear what they can do for the AI. Also, it still keeps the chance of a trader visiting a certain human planet down, even if the chance to visit any human planet goes up with more planets captured, so your original goal is still satisfied somewhat.

Oh, and I have redeemed myself of this change now. :D

I have them turned on in 4.066 and have 2 Z-generator, 2 B-hole thingies, 2 radar thingies ½-ing enemy range, 2 counter spies... and started with a dead-end homeplanet. I dont see why this needs a change .. I was under the impression it is 'more' than easy enough to get them on your planets and choosing a dead-end homeplanet in combi with Z-traders is something you yourself do.

@Red Spot

Say you are on an 80 planet map. Previously (in 4.066), the Zenith Trader would have a 100% chance of choosing one of your planets (in this case, you terminal home) as its first or second planet to visit. Now, the chance of it visiting your terminal home whenever it choosing a new planet is only 1/80. Yes, it is more likely that you will see it at any one of your planets as you capture more, but the chance of it choosing to visit any specific planet remains a flat 1/80.

Note, you may see it more often than that on planets that connect many other planets together, as it has to move from planet to planet after all. Terminal planets wont have this "problem" though.

Very well stated. :)

Iirc the change to the trader was made before 4.066, I never saw the trader on my homeplanet. I simply took a planet in between AI-planets and have lots of trader goodies there, and repeated the proces on an other planet.
Now it goes back to the trader actually choosing your planets, I liked it better before when it meant you had to set yourself up to be visited by the trader. (No offence but the reason I like this game is cause it doesnt just make it easy on the player but forces you to use that grey mass, this change sort of does the opposite, removes the need to think.)

IMO, the traders are not making it easier for you. It is just that they are not making it easier for the AI anymore. The chances of it choosing a planet you want is pretty slim. With the exception of bottleneck planets or hub planets, the chance of it even passing through a planet is still pretty low. With these points in mind, I don't think this change makes it easy on they player. It just stops it from being unfair to the point of failing to meet its purpose for the player. If you want a version that is supposed to be unfair to the player with the description clearly detailing so, maybe post-5.0 can have a Zenith Traders (hard) minor faction.
