Summary | 0028231: Explain More: Map and Map controls
Description | The map controls don't feel very good. I think a bit more of a tutorial would be useful. It's hard to understand where you are in the city relative to the map and what orientation you are in. I'd like a minimap with the viewable camera shape marking your area of view. I'd like that camera shape to also appear on the map when you are scrolling around. Even when I know I'm looking at a portion of the map, it's hard to recognize that is the city when you unzoom. I'd like to be able to zoom in/out from the map to the city view using the scroll wheel of my mouse. I'd like to have the compass on by default. I'd like to have more important things (e.g., your tower, your units) appear on the compass. I'd like to have the icons for the various things on the map be larger. I'd like to be able to map the boundaries of security zones (perhaps a border with the hue corresponding to the level of security required.). After 8 hours of play, I learned that if you click on the map, when you return to the city view, your view jumps to that location (sometimes).

I would also like either a minimap, or a compass to know my orientation, and/or make the visual representation of where you are/your orientation far clearer on the city map. There is actually a cone on the map to show this, but it is very obscure and easy to miss. |

Next build: directly clicking to go from the map to the streets view is in. Previously you had to be holding control for that to work. Minimap of camera: probably not going to ever be a thing, but definitely not in the next few months. It would require a lot of work, and there's nowhere to put it. And you're not meant to have perfect awareness. Compass: that's a feature I was close to just outright removing, but I'm glad someone finds it useful, I guess. "zoom in/out from the map to the city view using the scroll wheel of my mouse" definitely would never happen, as getting very high and then moving around can be important. And the scale between the two places is not quite 1:1. I mean, I really don't think this is likely, anyway. "I'd like to have the icons for the various things on the map be larger." If you're very zoomed out, it would be a constant clutter, I think. But I could put in a scaling thing. When you're zoomed in, they're already pretty big. "I'd like to be able to map the boundaries of security zones (perhaps a border with the hue corresponding to the level of security required.)." To be perfectly frank, this is not information I really want to give to you. Overall perfect information of the entire city? That kills any sense of exploration. You can already see danger zones as you move about, and some of the rest of that info is what I would consider on the other side of the fog of (information) war. |

"There is actually a cone on the map to show this, but it is very obscure and easy to miss." Once you know what that is, you have the info, though, right? |

I'm hijacking this thread since it falls under the spectrum of "unclear map controls" - I noticed that shifting between the tactical map and the 'overview map' doesn't save your position between them. As in, if I close the overview map by hitting Tab, it takes me to a different place on the tactical map- presumably wherever I was looking before I opened the big map. What I would like is for the maps to be synced, so I can find where I am easier on each of them. |
|
I am continually surprised that that's the desire, but that does seem to be the case. I'm going to make that the way it works (again -- it used to work that way about 5 months ago), but with a toggle to turn it back to working like it is now. |
|
Thanks! * When you switch between the map mode and the regular streets view, it now immediately syncs the position of your views. ** I was going to make this an option, but it feels so much better this way that I'm just going to make it how it works. |
