Summary0028584: Soft-lock state possible if all slurry production is destroyed before repair spiders are placed
DescriptionOkay, trogg helped me figure this out. You CAN escape the soft-lock by gathering (I did not remember that gather gets slurry.) However, if you just let units autogather, it's possible to be in a state where the producers consume it all before you get a chance to use it. This, in turn, could be fixed by a player by disabling their consumers OR by having a unit manually gather, but that will not be obvious to a new player (or an experienced one who runs into this and doesn't put together what happened.)

Expected: can recover from resource-missing situations in chapter 1.

Actual: my slurry spiders were all destroyed while very early (so microbots were consuming many) before I had placed any repair spiders. Now I'm unable to repair them. I do not have a technician deployed, so I can't use that ability, and deploying costs slurry, so I can't just place one. I only have 9 slurry, so I'm not even able to destroy one of the damaged sites and build a new one.

It's not likely to be a frequent situation, because it requires all of those (no tech, not enough banked slurry to recover, and all slurry production destroyed.) However, this is a soft lock and would require me to start a new game. Fortunately I was just running it to test something unrelated.

* The manual "Gather" ability has been completely removed.
** At the start of each turn, but AFTER resources from jobs have already come and gone, the equivalent of the Gather ability now automatically runs, but better than before.
** It now includes units in vehicles, which it was erroneously not doing before.
** If you have remaining mental energy, then it also cashes that in for your highest-scavenging-skill units that are not busy with an action-over-time.
** This also solves the "slurry softlock" timing issue.
