Summary0003780: Keys like L and shift-L, but that round down instead of up.
DescriptionAfter conquering a planet, I tend to leave some small fraction of my fleet behind as a garrison. As is, I either:

a) Use L/Shift-L a couple of times, and then Alt-click the ships I don't want to remain behind (mostly starships), and then Ctrl-Alt-# to remove them from my main group, or

b) assuming 1 is my main fleet, use L, save this as group 2, select 1 then Ctrl-Alt-2, which leaves me with my rounded-down half. This usually has to be repeated once or twice.

So, I don't know if anyone else does anything similar, but a new key that worked just like L and Shift-L but rounded down (including 1 to 0) would make my life much easier. Yes, I know you can just use L and move your ships physically and split them up that way, but what can I say I'm a sucker for hotkeys. :)

Alternately, a Settings option could be set up to decide whether L/Shift-L round up or down.

I like the idea! My personal interest in this is that I often have large armies that include a couple of starships, and currently, when I want to split off a shard of my army using the splitting keys, there's always ONE starship of each type remaining in the sub-group since halves/thirds are rounded up, requiring me to Alt-click them out one after another.

Perhaps add alt+L as "unselect half" (and equivalent alt+shift+L), which does the same as the altless version, but operates on the other half of the fleet. Given that alt already does subtraction in other places, this kind of makes sense.

I would like to be able to use both "round up" and "round down" variants interchangeably, depending on whether I want the bigger half of the fleet to go somewhere or stay behind, so a setting to switch between the two behaviours wouldn't be useful to me.

Interesting idea but I'm not sure it would really solve the problem. For the select/unselect half pair of commands, the effect would indeed be equivalent to a "select half rounding up/down" feature. However for select/unselect third, it would be a completely different thing as it would result in a "select third, rounding up/select two-third rounding down". Therefore it would be more difficult to use it as a way to select one third of your fleet, rounded down because you'd need to use two sets of key presses: Alt-Shift-L and then L (or Alt-L?). What if I wanted 1/9 rounded down? 4 sets of key presses.

I still think that having a game setting that lets you decide whether it round up or down would be best. Then you could *also* have an Alt-version of the L/Shift-L commands - combined with the Rounding option, it would give users a lot of flexibility (ever wanted to select two-thirds of your fleet? I know I have!)

Good point on the one-third selection -- I missed that somehow.

I'd still prefer having a modifier to toggle behaviour rather than a config switch. I alternate between wanting the two behaviours so rapidly that it's quicker to do the complicated "pause, send the whole fleet somewhere, select half, tell the selected half to stay" than it would be to find the setting and adjust it between fleet movements.
