Summary0004369: Several coastal ocean areas trigger the 'second step' event of spawning you mid-zone.
DescriptionSeems to happen mostly on peninsulas, but that could just be my seed. Based on the tooltip, it seems like the coastal zones are supposed to spawn you on zone-edge, but mid-ocean, you spawn mid-zone. Ive found several coastal zones that spawn you mid-zone at the bottom of a cave.

Extra note: These seem to be of the 'ocean shallows' variety, instead of the pure 'ocean' tiles. (both appear to be coastal candidates )

I've understood it as "if you cross from one ocean square into another, it spawns you in the middle; if you cross from land into ocean, it spawns you on the edge". Could that be what's happening? I've not noticed this myself.

And all the tooltip says is "take one step, end up at the edge, take a second and get spawned in the middle", which can be interpreted both ways.

This sounds like it is working properly, but I'm having a hard time following the wording. How it should work:

Q: Are you standing in ocean?

A. No? Step into ocean and you go into the zone edge.

A. Yes? Step into another ocean tile and you go to the middle of the zone.

Standing on land, and stepping into 'ocean shallows' spawns into a cave, about 2 or 3 areas into the map.

I once (accidentally) stepped into a coastal tile and spawned on the edge, but then panicked about which direction to go, hit a bunch of keys and ended up in the middle of the same region. It's possible that I managed to leave and re-enter the same tile, but given the speed with which it happened, I think that's unlikely. I'll try a couple of options and see if I can replicate.

I've seen this too, where I step from a land tile to a sea tile and go directly to the stuck-in-the-middle case. I'll see if I still have that world file.

I've played around a bit and found the following behaviour:

 * If you enter an ocean region from a non-ocean region, you spawn at the entrance.
 * If you enter an ocean region from another ocean region, you spawn in the middle. This happens even for coastal regions.
 * If you enter an ocean region you're standing on by hitting "E", you spawn at the entrance. This happens even for non-coastal regions.

This is all in a new world I started with 0.510, if it makes any difference.

Hmm. I just had the same thing happen to me; you seem to always be put into the middle when you enter Ocean Shallows, and it follows the above when you enter Ocean. Going from Ocean Shallows to Ocean puts you at the edge.

Thanks!

* Previously, the lava flats, the deep, and the ocean shallows were sucking the player into the middle of them on the first steps into those regions, rather than the second.
** This was apparently an intentional decision I made a while back from looking at the code, but I don't know what I was thinking.
