Summary0007410: AVWW fails to respond upon dying in the Overlord Lair
DescriptionAfter my first attempt at the overlord (I died) I noticed some weird graphics. Nevermind I thought, chose a new character - and the weirdness continued. Whenever I tried to move to the right with the character, it was replaced with a white box containing a small red line, like there was some artwork missing. I tried to exit to the main menu then and the game just hung up.

I attached the debug log.

It looks like your install is slightly corrupt. These lines:

Failed to find index! Images/Characters/NeutralSkelebotMale/NeutralSkelebotMaleWalk/NeutralSkelebotMaleWalk_Dict.png,22

Mean that some images are missing or the wrong size. If you installed through Steam, you can fix this by simply hitting Verify Steam Cache in the properties for the game in the steam client. Then you'll have to re-update to 1.006 but you won't lose any progress or anything like that. This happens sometimes with Steam just randomly not downloading quite all the files for the game.

If you installed the game from another source, my bet would be that you were part of the beta and missed some intermediate update somehow (my fault, not yours). A simple solution for that is just to go to our main site and download the 1.000 installer and install right on top of your existing installation. Again it won't lose any of your stuff, but it will revert you to 1.000. Just update to 1.006 again there, and you should be good to go!

Hi!

Thanks for the quick response. I play via Steam and the method you suggested worked like a charm. I was just wondering how this could happen in the middle of the game. The files were definitely there, I *could* move to the right and it displayed all animations correctly until I died in the throneroom.

Anyhow, let's hope it does not happen again - those hard to reproduce bugs can be a real pain in the neck. Thanks again.

That's really strange! So it was working that all your animations were there, and then suddenly not? When you died in the throne room did you choose a new kind of character? A male skelebot instead of female, for instance? That would be fitting with just some of the files not having downloaded properly.

After dying I chose indeed a male skelebot, but I had one of those in my village and he was moving around, so if the NPCs do not use other animation files than the player character, the animation was fine before the death.

Also I saw this white box indicating a missing animation already after my old character died in the throneroom, right before the ghost spawned, so it seems something else was missing even then. The first error messages are like

5/1/2012 8:18:08 PM
Failed to find index! Images/Characters/PlayerBones/PlayerBonesWalk/PlayerBonesWalk_Dict.png,9

and afterwards the system complains about the missing Skelebot animation.

Again, it works now but I am not convinced that my installation was corrupt to begin with.

Yeah, that's pretty odd. Did you by any chance get really low on RAM or anything? At any rate, I put in the following change to 1.007 to at least help:

* When an image fails to load, it will no longer log copious errors to the debug log about that (which would damage the stability and framerate of the game until restart).

That way the downstream errors (not finding indexes in images) aren't masking the root issue (that the image itself wasn't found). If it happens again, at least it should be clearer!

Thanks!

I have 3 GB of RAM running Win XP. There were nothing of interest running in the bckground (except Steam of course). So I can't exclude it - possibly that is the reason, but I can't really say for sure. So my proposal is to close the issue as not reproducable and see if it happens again for anyone. :-)

Thanks again!

Cheers -- you should be perfectly fine with that sort of setup, yeah. If it occurs again let us know!
