Summary0000829: gc fatal error: GetThreadContext failed
DescriptionWhen starting AI War the InitGame display counts up to 9, then the error message gc fatal error: GetThreadContext failed appears. The game does not close after the message is closed but it freezes and the process must be killed manually.

I've had this happen with some 3.80x versions too (not 3.711), it disappeared with 3.901 (I had to uninstall the broken installs and reinstall 3.711, patching from there) and now reappeared with the latest update.

We've seen other reports of Unity-based apps encountering this error when Kapersky anti-virus is running. There was also another AV that seems to have a similar problem.

Which AV are you running, if any?

Yep, Kaspersky.

Thanks for confirming that. If you have a chance (and the willingness) to test the game with Kapersky disabled/off/unloaded/etc, and see if the error still happens, that would be useful info for us.

But as it is, I believe the flaw (in either Unity, Mono, Kapersky, or some combination thereof) is outside the range of what we can change.

Just unloading Kaspersky didn't help, neither 3.904 nor a freshly installed 3.711 (didn't uninstall 3.904 first) ran. Usually at least 3.711 works. Then I re-started Kaspersky, deinstalled all versions of AI War Unity and then reinstalled 3.711, that worked. Patched that to 3.904, that then started OK.

Bizzare.

But if it's actually working for you (for now, anyhow), that's good news.

Well, it stopped working after I rebooted the computer. Great.

Hm, after another reinstall and repatch it worked for a while, then broke again. Then I tried using "Run as Administrator", that strangely made it work.

Yep, seems like "Run as Administrator" makes it work consistently.

Well, that's good at least. Apparently there is just something that antivirus does not like about AI War or Unity, that is quite a shame (and other games, too, from the sounds of it). Many other free antivirus programs don't have this issue, but I know everyone has their own preferences so I'm glad you found a workaround at least!

Hmm, odd. Though it makes a degree of sense if the error is being caused by some combination of security restrictions. We'll probably just have to call that the workaround for now, until Unity has a chance to see if they can resolve the issue more fundamentally. Thanks for the info :)

It's gotten worse again, now I can't even start 4.000 anymore. Tidalis works fine BTW.

My guess is that it's a timing problem, the error tends to appear at different steps of the startup sometimes (e.g. after some installing or updating it sometimes happens at step 5 instead of 9) and step 8, the one before the crash, tends to take very long.
