Summary0008673: Utility spell enchant slot
DescriptionAfter the recent spell overhaul, most utility spells are spells that you craft once and then never have to worry about again. In order to retain a little bit of the feel of upgrading and making decisions about these spells, I propose adding a new enchant slot to the game. (There's room for one more anyway.)

* This could be the Waist enchant slot, since it feels kind of like carrying around a belt with specialized tools, or it could be called something more abstract like Utility Upgrade.
* Possible effects include all of the effects previously associated with upgrading utility spells (e. g., increased Flash of Light duration, reduced Storm Dash mana cost) as well as some new ones (increased Ball of Light radius, reduced Greater Teleport mana cost, reduced damage taken from Miniaturize Self).
* Only equippable in safe zones, so you can't do things like switch to an enchant that improves Lesser Teleport right before you teleport.
* I could see these either being effects with fixed magnitudes that you buy from the Opal Guardian or as random enchants. In the latter case, each one would have a fixed utility effect and other random utility effects.
* Each utility spell should be significantly more useful if you have an enchant that improves it. Some of them might need to have their base effects weakened a bit, which is probably fair since you no longer have to go through the trouble of crafting them on every continent.

Ooooh, I like this idea. (I also like the idea of Waist slots, though if any slot could be doubled up so you can have 2 of it equipped at once, it would be this one (and likely be a Ring slot at that point). In some ways it'll also add another metroidvania aspect (if they are randomly obtained, rather than being able to buy specific enchants) since then utility spells will improve over time rather than obtain-and-forget.

However, I would suggest that the each of the enchants covers a set of related spells rather than boosting a single one. By keeping them related, it means each enchants would still have it's own identity without running into issues when you get a good enchant form, say, Ball Of Light when you use Flash Of Light. (I still need to look in the game encyclopedia before I suggest what spells should be in each set, and then possibly suggest the enchants that go under it, but I'll come back and add that note later.)

Okay, so follow up:-

* Illumination Belt: Governs Ball Of Light, Fire Flare, Flash Of Light and Light Snake
* Motion Belt: Governs Lightning Rocket, Ride The Lightning and Storm Dash
* Protection Belt: Governs Douse Monster Nest, Healing Touch, Seize Object, Splashback
* Temporal Belt: Governs Nightfall and Sunrise
* Translocation Belt: Governs Greater Teleport and Lesser Teleport
* Transmutation Belt: Governs Miniaturize Self and Shrink Object

I can definitely get behind most of those. The two that I'm not so sure about are the Motion Belt and Temporal Belt. Storm Dash and Ride the Lightning are both useful enough that a significant improvement to either would probably be competitive with anything else, and unlike the light spells, players are likely to use both of them. I think there could be one enchant (or enchant effect) for Storm Dash and another for RtL + Lightning Rocket.

As for the Temporal Belt, I'm not sure how to improve Sunrise and Nightfall in a meaningful way, at least the way they are currently implemented.

The main improvements to Sunrise and Nightfall I can think of would be reducing the mana cost, increasing the amount of time they shift (so you end up in mid-morning rather than sunrise, for instance), and a limiting effect that means they only advance mission time in certain regions. [I'll admit that it's probably the weakest of the belts, but so Elven Boots arguably for Feet and they're still in there, plus there's considering that there may be future utilities as well that fit.]

Breaking off Storm Dash I don't have a problem with, though I wouldn't want it out on it's own; I'd add it to the Translocation Belt next (since they both deal with covering distances.) Despite the removal, I can see the Motion Belt still being strong, though; the magnitude of benefit in that belt would need to be less than that in others to balance them out a bit and tempt people away.

This is an interesting idea. However, I'm inclined against it, because I feel like there are already a lot of enchants to keep track of; adding yet another one could make managing your enchants feel like a lot of work, with a lot of slots to keep track of - and another thing to remember if you're trying to optimize your build for a certain purpose (eg: ok, I'm going underwater; do I have the best enchant for my utility slot equipped?) (That said, I could be totally wrong, and perhaps players would welcome a utility slot, and find having to consider another enchant slot to be only a minor issue.)

Instead, perhaps all of these utility spells could be upgradable, as (to my understanding, in the current beta) attack spells currently are. Perhaps shrink object could be upgraded, to make the miniaturized items home in on your character (maybe at the cost of a longer cooldown, or greater mana cost); Ball of light could have its illumination effect increased; etc.
^-- Maybe this idea should be its own topic.

Most of the utility spells once had upgrades, but they were removed because they didn't make sense with the new level system.
