Summary0008938: Allow Aspiring Overlords to attack formerly-freed continents?
DescriptionThis came to me while writing a comment on Dizzard's idea regarding Overlord's squabbling amongst themselves, and I realized it probably deserved its own suggestion.

What about having new, prospective Overlords, or existing Overlords on higher continents, attacking previously freed continents? Possibly as a (occasional) way to manifest the "next" continent or tier of gameplay content? By tier, I'm not referring to the deprecated game concept by the way.

An example of this might be the following:

I have just defeated the Overlord on Continent 4.

Instead of jumping straight to Continent 5, Continent "5-and-a-half" is the re-visiting of continent 2 (picked at random) to decapitate a new aspiring Overlord's attempt to establish himself, perhaps with a much briefer strategic approach that takes into account the existing infrastructure in a new way.

The settlement is under attack and I have to complete a series of missions in nearby time shards to repel his initial onslaught. Then perhaps I can work using NPC dispatch missions to establish a solid front and reclaim the settlement.

Meanwhile, the wannabe Big Baddie has completed one of several possible actions: retreated to the old Overlord Keep, retreated to deep within a cave system in an unknown time shard (NPC missions can locate him), or perhaps he moves to another continent (possibly a very low chance of this happening?).

And react accordingly. :)

This would give the game a bit more feeling of being in a dynamic world, while not forcing you to always feel like you're one step away from being crushed like a bug by the Overlord. Perhaps instead of such events being your "next continent" they could be a completely optional event that you are simply notified of, which has no explicit reward but whose situation degrades the longer you neglect to address it. If you DO want to be a Noble Hero of that nameless settlement you barely remember from many continents ago, better hop to it!

In addition to "mixing it up" in a well-established game, this might also be an answer to many players' longstanding requests for having the Overlord be more of a visible threat to the world--beyond just lurking in his keep with nary a "muahaha" to be heard. :)

Maybe even a Vengeful Ghost, if left unchecked (see Ghost feature suggestions), could inspire a boss to try and become a continent's new Overlord, thus tying into death penalties too and other features suggested about Vengeful Ghosts. Wouldn't it be cool to see a boss "possessed" by the spirit of your dead self?

That definitely sounds like an interesting twist, Matthew. :D

If you needed some justification, it could be the spirit roaming off into the untamed storms and becoming twisted by them, or even just attracting ugliness/monsters to it.

There seems to already be hints of some mechanism like that existing...

Although I would like to see my idea be implemented in such a way that it's basically guaranteed to happen, but in an entirely optional way, too. :D

But I definitely like this idea, too, as another way to "shake things up" a bit. We need more surprises beyond just "d'oh, my lieutenant is a giant green amoeba" and the occasionally overinfested room/tower. :D
