Product Version1.203
Summary0009002: Dread Gazebo extremely over-powered
DescriptionNot only does it have absurd range (it can still find me before it comes onto my screen when i have -70% detectability), but its attack is deadly AND heat-seeking. and to top it all off, you can't hurt it with ranged spells.

the single best way to fix this would be to make it vulnerable at ranged spells; its status as a background object means that you are forced to be so close to its attack that you can almost never dodge in time.

another effective fix would be to greatly decrease its attack strength. 100+ damage (unshielded) is far too much for an attack that homes in to you.

as a further balance, it should be prevented from spawning in Defend Supply Depot missions. its presence makes failing the mission much more common, as you have to not only risk your life killing the gazebo, but fend off the meteors at the same time. it's doable, but it's also much, much harder than it should be.

These are definitely annoying.

That said, they're really not THAT bad MOST of the time. But when combined with a mess of other things going on and the fact that a direct hit is nearly as painful as a direct hit from an Insanity Burst generator was before the nerf--they can be pretty painful at times. :D

But I've never run into one that I couldn't slip past, destroy, or otherwise deal with. I think they're fine, personally, but I also play on standard difficulty. :)

I look at these as a sort of miniboss type encounter. A way for the game to throw you a curveball. It fits in with the whole roguelike approach of permadeath that there are GOING to be things that trip you up or present an unexpected or sudden powerful threat. :) So many great memories/horror stories of murdering myself with my own magic wand in ADOM and things like that, haha.

it WOULD be like a miniboss, except that i keep running into two of them every time i enter an area where they can appear. there's at LEAST one in each chunk. it's just getting preposterous.

and because of this, it's not a curveball. it's a constant annoyance.

They're not too hard to snipe with Luminous Arc (the Long-ranged yet melee damage type Light spell) - but that's assuming I have a character with enough MP to use Luminous Arc.

If I don't have the MP for Luminous Arc, then naturally I have to get a lot closer with a melee-ranged Melee spell - which makes the Gazebos trickier and annoying, yes, but not impossible - at least not for me.

I'm on the fence about this. I like the change-up that Dread Gazebos provide (you've gotta use melee spells; their homing+exploding projectiles), but at the same time they can seem annoying and tedious to defeat (although I suppose I could just run & jump past them, most of the time...but where's the fun in that?).

These seem more like the sort of enemy where you just have to know how to go about attacking them correctly.

Try this:

When encountering one, stand back a bit, and wait for it to fire. Jump up and over the green thing, and over the Gazebo itself. Jump decently high, so you have some hang time. The green bolt should try to circle around in an arc to come after you, and should burst when it's somewhat below you. Drop down between the projectiles as they scatter, land right in the center of the Gazebo, hit it with something like Ice Cross or Insect Orb (both do more damage to larger targets like that when the entire spell hits). and then run forward, and as you're running forward the Gazebo will have recharged, and will fire another green bolt at you.... rinse and repeat the above process and these guys go down without TOO much trouble. It's actually pretty easy to do this without taking even one hit.

This is the tactic I use both on Master Hero and Chosen One difficulty. Even on that high difficulty, and even with resistances (I think they're resistant to earth?), they still generally take only about two hits to destroy, with those spells.

Chances are the new Flower X spell would be very effective as well.

Honestly, I don't find them too bad - it's a matter of legging it when they fire, and so timing their fire. That said, if they had some kind of firing-warning, it would go a long way to making them more reasonable - a glow that steadily grows before going back to normal when it fires (growing over 1 second) would be sufficient, as would "holding" the projectile for a small time before releasing it.

They seem fine balance-wise, to me. I'd be against a nerf to their damage.

Timing is definitely critical on these, and I could get behind BenMiff's idea of a visual indicator/'charge up' before the projectile is released.

They may already internally have something like this, but I DO think they ought to count as more than one enemy in terms of populating an area.

Having 2 dread gazebos in already pretty full indoor area would probably be pretty awful. XD

But I still feel that these are balanced, just annoying. :D

Same for Green Amoeba bosses, another enemy I previously felt was overpowered until I learned how to tackle them properly. Now they're still potentially quite dangerous, but not a crisis if you use an effective tactic.

I'm inclined against this. I wouldn't be against some slight tuning of their damage, but I like the threat they provide in the game.

There are definitely worse.
Have you fought a Gargon boss or a Brimstone Cyclone? A Landspeeder?
