Summary0009115: Switching Spells might have an alternative configuration.
DescriptionI've had slight aversion to switching spells because of needing to reconfigure the little inventory grid. This results in my bludgeoning an enemy with an inferior spell because I'm too lazy to look for a better one at the moment. I set up my spells at the settlement, but sometimes choose the wrong one and go with it.

To allow easier spell switching, you might consider one of these:

Suggestion 1: Clicking on the numerical key 1-10 replaces the spell assigned to mouse click 1 (only). So if I wanted to cast a bunch of leaf whips, I don't jam on the keyboard a few times, but it automatically goes to my mouse before I switch out again later by hitting a keyboard key again.

Suggestion 2: Since the grid has items situated above the 1-10 hot button keys anyways, it might be preferrable to have the first three designated for the mouse specifically, but also have the magics cycle in a column as you press the button repeatedly. (If you pressed 1 several times, it would cycle through the spells above it, replacing the mouse button bindings.)

Suggestion 3: Each of the first 6 keyboard hot-buttons could represent one of the elemental spell affinities. This could be combined with suggestion 2 to have the player cycle through the different classes of magic that are perma-linked to the categories. 1=Fire 2=Ice or 1=Offensive 2=Bomb (Might be worthwhile to have a user specified auto-designation, but I haven't thought that out.)

Suggestion 4: Each of the first 3-4 buttons could be perma-linked to the "range" of the particular magic so that close range is 1, mid is 2, long is 3 or something similar. 4 Could be wall-following long range, maybe. Combined with suggestion 2, it might result in an arsenal that allows for quick and easy referencing, thus negating my laziness due to slight clunkiness.

I found that I almost always paused to swap any spell I wanted to use more than twice in a row to one of my mouse-button spots (doubly so in actual dangerous situations like boss battles), and that's just moving it there from my quickbar. Which aside from being impossible in multiplayer pausing that much is symptomatic of something being wrong. So I definitely agree that an *alternate* control schema where, say, you manually put your "primary" spell in your left mouse button slot and then the number keys swap items into the right mouse button slot as you need them would be cool. Existing system should of course be kept for those who want to use it (heck, I'd probably use it half the time while exploring just for the range of options).
