Summary0001048: Requesting less alien-y ships and buildings, and more techy ones
DescriptionLike the title says, I've been kind of feeling that AI War has lately been about fighting against aliens, what with all the expansion stuff, the new guardians and guard posts looking rather organic, and not very technical, which is kind of the opposite of what AI's are traditionally built around or inside. Even if the AI uses alien tech a lot, they could still have their ships looking human-esque, with alien-y outings and decorations for those techy parts.

I realize this is a matter of taste, but I personally liked the pre-zenith stuff a lot more, because the opponent looked more like it actually evolved from something built by human hands. Sort of human tech with corners rounded and more blinky lights and stuff.

Perhaps for LotS we could get more stuff like what AI War started with, graphics-wise? :) Maybe the AI learns to research new stuff and comes up with its own new inventions and tech?

My art style is what it is, I can only do certain types of art in a reasonable amount of time, and I like the look of this stuff. I feel like the stuff an AI creates WOULD be pretty alien-looking, as it wouldn't follow the normal rules we use when creating stuff anymore than actual aliens would.

Yea. Have you checked out designs created by genetic algorithms and other AIs? They do the job well, but they look very freaky and weird. Thus, this alien look would make sense.

I just happened to really prefer the look of the stuff AI War started with, and things that were somewhat identifiable. Now I can't tell at all what something does by looking at it, and even when I know what it does, it still doesn't look like it could even do it. A bit of a shame.

Not that I'm saying the art itself is bad. I really like the general look of many of the new guard posts and guardians, and the details on them. They just don't seem to fit together with the old stuff somehow.

But I'll leave it at that. If it's not a bother to anyone else... might as well focus on other things. ;p

Note that the original art for AI War was done by an artist in 1992, and there's no way to get any more of it. Then the stuff that was added in 2.0 and TZR was done by Phil, but he's currently on other projects and we can't afford to engage him. I could do something a bit closer to that art style in 3D, but it would take way longer and I tend not to be very inspired for that sort of thing, it just feels a bit generic to me. Hence my comments above.
