Summary0011036: Sound went away entirely since I unplugged speakers from laptop
DescriptionI had freshly installed and updated AI War on my Acer laptop, running Windows 7 x64. I was playing the first game I've played on this laptop, and I had some Altec Lansing speakers plugged in. I unplugged the speakers to carry the laptop to another room and keep playing there. And ever since there has been no sound in AI War of any kind.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it in the Steam client, which did nothing. Unfortunately my desktop has died so I can only test it on the laptop now. Next I'll try reinstalling the sound driver (Realtek HD Audio), but after that I won't know much else to try (not a techie).

It blows because AI War is a game that loses a lot of it's charm without the sound. I could try installing the "base game" version from the Arcen Games site, which would be different from the Steam version. Can I use the Steam key to unlock that one? I'll try it.

EDIT:

I fixed it! :D

All I did was disable the sound driver, start up AI War, changed an in-game volume setting hoping that would help it recognize a driver change and maybe reset itself (I have no idea if that made any difference), closed AIW, enabled the sound driver, opened AI War, and heard lovely chanting again.

This is actually a problem with any windows program really. It will grab the default sound device in use when started. If the default sound device is removed, it won't notice this fact.

Likely AI War does not run a check for a working sound device every time it starts, so you had to find a way to trigger the check.

Hey Chthon,

I'm a bit surprised reinstalling doesn't do anything. I'm guessing you would have had to reinstall Steam itself.

It would be cool if Windows had some sort of "I change sound drivers often" option so that it would occasionally do that check/reset by itself.
