Here is the thing. AFIAK, the group move order does not remember what ships were a part of group after it was issued. Instead, at the time the order was issued, it computes the speed the group move should go at (and an extra step for whether there is a gravity immune ship and non-gravity immune ships in the order, and those grav immune ships are told to slow down in the presence of gravity), tells everything that is selected to go at that speed and where to go to, and then no longer tracks the group from then on.
This model brings some rather unfortunate limitations, like the one this issue is about. While this would be cool, I think it would require adding a bunch of logic to the group-move stuff, and TBH, there are some higher priority things that the dev-hours really need to go to right now.

Quick question. If you issue a group move order, does it refresh the movement speeds? So if you are actively controlling the fleet, it will tend to correct? If so, There is not a major problem here. |

Yes, every time you issue group move, it repeats this process. Which means it recomputes the speed to use for the group that was given the order. So yea, if you regive the group-move order to a sub-set of the original group, it will effectively do what you asked.
(Again, once the ships start moving after a group move, the game no longer keeps track of that group) |

Yeah, it was just something I thought would be nice if it was easy to do, but if it's something hard to do (and it sounds like it would be based on your comments) then I'd agree that other things are more deserving of time.
