Summary0012499: Ironman mode retreat option
DescriptionThis is thinking ahead a bit too much seeing as ironman mode isn't implemented yet, but I'd like it if you were allowed to retreat during a mission.

Let's say I'm in a mission and things are looking grim, maybe I lose an exo and seem outnumbered then I'd like to have to make a hard decision on whether I should continue with the current mission.

The good thing about this is that it would tie the overworld HQ health mechanic back into permadeath mode, which would otherwise be useless if the permadeath meant you had to always survive/complete the mission.

Would this cheapen the permadeath -- absolutely not! And believe me I'm a hardcore permadeath fan. This is because you would still lose the mission and your headquarters would still take damage. It actually helps make permadeath more seamlessly fit in with the current overworld strategy model.

I want to have to assess the situation and be forced to make those hard decisions in order to live to fight another day. Maybe I could revise my Exo loadouts and think of creative ways to play the game. To be clear, you wouldn't get any destroyed exos back although your bots would be repaired.

Actually, thinking about it, this is pretty obvious and it might actually be what is intended for Ironman mode anyway....but I've wrote this out now...might as well post it!

Any flaws in the idea gratefully received.

I'm not sure I follow. In ironman mode, it's not about losing exos and them never coming back -- that would be insanity. It's about not being able to save-scum in this case, and thus if your HQ falls, it falls.

Yeah, I thought you were going for a more roguelike permadeath. Not being able to save-scum is not really what I was hoping for, but maybe that's the real definition of ironman mode.

"it's not about losing exos and them never coming back -- that would be insanity"

Well, that's permadeath for ya! But, I guess ironman mode is different from a Dungeons of Dredmor style permadeath.

Quite disappointing for me actually, as I had my heart set on a proper roguelike permadeath mode.

Well, in dungeons of dredmor, your guy doesn't die in like two hits. I think the game is literally impossible on expert with not being able to have any exos die, honestly.

Though if Keith wants to implement an ironman variant that has this, then I guess I won't stand in the way of it. ;)

Incidentally, the retreat option already exists in any case: abandon mission.

Yeah, retreat exists, but it would need to be slightly modified as to not restore any destroyed exos, though.

Yep, this mode would be brutal....with a capital B. But, hey this is a roguelike(light). You'll get roguelike street cred for what that's worth. :)

I really think this could be excellent, it's a bit of extra work, so I hope Keith thinks it may be worth doing. If not, it'll be disappointing, but I'll get over it.

"I think the game is literally impossible on expert with not being able to have any exos die, honestly." Losing can be fun! :)

Oh, just to clarify, you would be able to lose 1 exo, but not all 4. That's the way I envisaged it anyway. Imagine being down to your last favourite exo "Tommy" going into the final battle..against the odds... with an overload primed...heh!

The only major problem I can forsee with allowing you to lose individual exos, but not all is the special on the dude who can regenerate exos. He would be pretty powerful on this mode....sigh. I can see it not happening, but maybe Keith can come up with something.

Edit: just thought of a solution for that commander who can regen exos -- make it 2 restored exos in total, not per mission. That'd work well I think.

I'll consider "dead is dead" for exos as a conduct for the first expansion, should there be one :) But for now just a savescum-prevntion ironman.

Aww, maybe in the future then. I really think it would enhance the existing gameplay.
