Will be curious to see how this works for you in .807. There is still more optimization that we will be working towards, but I expect your performance may be doubled based on Keith's profiling so far.

Laptop. Specifically, this save is from the game I PMed you last about (update 1.001). Keith asked if I had a save and I put it up.

My desktop hasn't run across anything, yet.

Edit: Since the new update is out now, I'll get an update up shortly.

Loaded it up and 5 FPS in that save. Once I start limiting the numbers of ships on screen, FPS picks up (20 with no ships, ~ 12 with a moderate amount). It's still hard to play at low frames though (under 15).

New game test laptop with graphics options disabled (needing performance):

Intro combat runs right at 60 FPS (woo hoo). Hydral missions @ 60.

Attack armada at a planet solo? Goes downhill fast. Load in @ 40 and as soon as I close in on the first cluster (putting them on screen) 17. Combat begins, 12. Interceptors and other misc ships, 7.

I'm positive that I wasn't seeing 60 frames before (in any combat), 40 was about as high as it went.

Well, that's certainly improved at least. But wow, that's a huge drop pretty fast from the graphics load alone. There are a few more things we might be able to enable turning off, but in general there's just a lot going on in a fight that large.
