Summary | 0013413: Overall feedback after federating races in the first game
Description | Not at the end yet, but I'll get busier with moving house over the next days, so here's some general responses. - The general pacing of the game is very spiky, and should hopefully improve with the time costs of each mission that's coming. Players can do things very fast compared to the factions, which ends up causing the grind in the first place because we run out of more fun things to do. - To get people into the state where a Federation can be formed, I've generally worked out a series of technology deals which boost the lowest relationships. (e.g. Andors -> Peltians, then Peltians to Skylaxians, then Skylaxians to Evucks as the last links to get everyone to 60+.) That was the most significant thing I can do in 0.808. - The combat mechanics is hard to judge in its current phase, due to the initial placement of ships around the circle, the AI's erratic behaviour, and bullet speed. I can't say definitively about balance. However, I have a feeling that 0.808 giving the player superior speed, and superior range can result in a very simple kiting game against any number of enemies. Instead of changing the speeds again, I'd consider switching the scheme: anti-shield weapons should be short-ranged (read energy blaster), and anti-hull weapons should be long ranged (read gravity lances). This favours knife-fighting to down the enemy quickly, and makes kiting significantly more difficult if you're not careful at keeping your shields up. Basically trading risk for fast kills, and putting some real risk into Burlust duels. Right now, the best strategy is to farm hydral tech missions until you get energy blaster and another weapon that doesn't have the ridiculous penalty, then kite them to death. OTOH, without periodically recharging healing abilities or short-time tanking abilities, it's difficult to justify diving into a mass of ships to pick off what you need. Maybe the game isn't designed to let you actually be Batman swooping into Joker's factory and doing his surgical strike. Solar map looks fine, but still need another playthrough with more things to interact with. - Splinter Faction event needs to stop after you help out once or twice, I think. They don't have that many ships to throw at you. - AFA insurgent mission could do with a name change and a couple of variations: lure AFA insurgents into ambush (you volunteer for this), organise international crackdown (more cooperation benefits, less efficiency), etc. In summary, I'm not sure what the expected strategic power level between the player and the races are with the game. Can I actually keep pace with good play with a strong faction, because I'm Batman *and* Bruce Wayne? Can I hire mercenaries or outsource protection of my outposts to another faction? Where are the pro-federation people? On interactivity, I would like to be able to recruit diplomats, agents (in the marketing sense) or other point of contacts with factions that I want to keep track of influence positively, rather than sabotage. I'd like to know more about the factions actions with each other, rather than with me (but the twitter feed is filled with "OMG I LOST AN ARMADA"). EDIT: For reference on where I'm at, the save file is attached. I punked the Burlusts into the Federation by killing the chiefs one by one until they could be pressured. They've been worshipping me for ages due to Thoraxian aggression, but I could not convince other races to help them out at all and so couldn't raise the Burlust's attitudes towards my other friendly races. B's just sat on their ice dwarves thinking those 150 power factions are weaklings to their 0. "Send fleet to defend faction X" would be a good idea. Note the number of votes I have with the Peltians. If they could throw moons at people, they would, for me. No idea where all that came from, but it just accumulated because I had other things to do.

Virtual Reality should unlock the option for me to telecast my heroic exploits to the solar system, like it does in Jet 'n' Guns. i.e. Magnifies my influence changes from combat to races that watch TV. :P |
