Summary0001369: A "good against" and "weak against" hotkey
DescriptionWith the new hull type/bonus system it can be awkward to determine what ships are strong or weak against what. A key that when a ship is selected, pops up an information window showing what it's good against, or what it's weak against, would be enormously helpful both for newbies and those veterans among us who have a hard time keeping these things straight.

Saying I would love those hotkeys would be an understatement.

It's a worthy addition down the line, though for me not a priority.

I believe there's already a key-bind for opening the reference tab for the selected ship or for its target, they just don't have default keys.

I think the OP is looking for a strong vrs weak data "subset" of the ref tab to open. The ref tab can be about 35 pages long whereas the old strong vrs weak data was instantly available by hovering over a ship.

Agreeing with Winter Born. That's probably what is wanted in this case. A simple tooltip that says something like:

[TOOLTIP]
GOOD AGAINST:
-------------
Ship Type x#
Ship Type x#
Ship Type x#

BAD AGAINST:
------------
Ship Type x#
[/TOOLTIP]

'Bad against' types could simply be the ones the ship has a below 1 multiplier. The 'x#' would be the multiplier number.

[EDIT]
Ideally the 'bad against' list would also have the ships that have a multiplier against the selected ship, though, heh. Just figured that knowing what to attack with is usually more sought after knowledge. Afterall, you're likely to consider not attacking with something that doesn't have a 'good against' multiplier anyways.

What Winter Born and HitmanN are describing is, indeed, exactly what I had in mind.

Alternatively:

Hotkey that creates an overlay over ships already on the map -- temporarily changing their colors:

White: ships you own.
Red: Ships the currently selected ship is weak against.
Green: Ships the currently selected ship is strong against.

Gradients of color (dark green vs bright green / dark red vs. bright red) possible for more granularity.

Uses: determining whether or not the currently selected ship will do well against enemies nearby for quick tactical decisions. Want speed of decision / intuitiveness to be very high.

That's an interesting idea too, Sizzle, though in large part what I want is information to allow me to plan what to bring to an encounter. If I'm already in the engagement, to be able to use the view you're mentioning, it's a bit late to find out I brought the wrong things. :)

Well, if it also worked on the planetary summary with the F1 lookup, that would be nice.

It'll be a while before I have time for something like that, though ;)

Well, if there is an option to select the colors that represent different levels (I am not color blind, but definitely color challenged)

I'm inclined for this, but it's not a priority for soon unless it gets upvoted a lot in the Vote Tallies list.

What's the etiquette on voting for one's own issue, anyway? :)

By all means, please do. Otherwise it doesn't register your interest at all. Have no shame in upvoting your own stuff, it's a critical function of the Vote Tallies. I'll put this in the FAQ.

@Sizzle's recommendation

Do want! That would be extremely helpful.

Just my personal taste but I don't want to see written
abrubtly "strong" or "weak" in the game.
Number tells it already and number tells better by shows also the
degree too. I like current way which things look little fuzzy.

my 2 cent. i would prefer the hotkey to drop a color highlight on targets you have a bonus against rather than a listing of ships. this would make it easy to see and target without cluttering information overload from info tabs. yes i realize this would mean a multi class fleet would highlight everything usually. but it would also highlight some important concerns such as leech starships missle immunity and the inability of siege starships to shoot at anything except starships.

For 5.002:

* In response to the number-one-on-the-vote-tallies mantis issue:
** Added new PlanetView KeyBind: "Show Strong/Weak Info":
*** Defaults to Alt+W.
*** When this is active and the mouse cursor is over a ship, each planetary summary sidebar entry will display Win/Lose/Draw (and a % indicating intensity of win or loss, if it's not a draw) as a rough indicator of how effective a cap of the ship type under the cursor would be against a cap of the entry's ship type. Since planetary summary entries frequently include multiple distinct types of ships, this is perhaps most useful in conjunction with the "Guide" mode of the planetary summary that shows all ships of a given mark level (the default key for switching to guide mode is F1). However, even in normal mode this can be useful to at least get a rough feel for which of your ships on the planet are the best you have on hand against a specific target.
*** Caveat: this is not using a full simulation or anything like that, it uses the same simplified formula as the reference tab uses. So stuff with modules won't really get accurate results (because it's only counting the base hull), etc.
*** Suggestions on text color, default keys, etc, are quite welcome; we're not totally happy with the effect right now but don't have a lot of time to fiddle with alternatives.
** Added new PlanetView KeyBind: "Strong/Weak => One Vs One":
*** Defaults to Alt+E (so the full combination would be to hold Alt+W+E).
*** When both this and the "Show Strong/Weak Info" keybind are active, the strong/weak info shown will use a one-ship vs. one-ship comparison instead of the normal cap vs. cap comparison.

As an expansion I could imagine a "strong/weak vs selected units" list that shows the one unit against the cursor vs the selected ships separated by ship type (e.g. point at a fortress and it'll tell you that, if you were to send the ships one type at a time, your bombers would be the only survivors).

I'm thinking that simply leaving your planetary summary on normal mode would be sufficent to show the object-under-cursor's effectiveness against each of your ship types on the planet.

But once y'all get a chance to work with this for a while, I'm open to follow-up suggestions. But not immediately unless it's some bug, etc, as I don't want to iterate this too rapidly.

I meant using the number of selected units instead of one or a full shipcap, sorry for the confusion.
