Summary | 0014013: Chaos in smuggling missions causing slowdown
Description | So, I've run into a problem with this mission type that can make for so many things moving around that it causes performance issues. Now, granted, I expect lots of horrible laser doom on this difficulty, but this is... well, the issue here is that it's enough to start to cause slowdown. And if it's causing slowdown on my machine, it's going to be alot nastier for weaker ones. It's not just the bullets there, but it's also the downright silly number of ships, which are the main problem here. Those large things spawn so many of them, and it just gets worse if one of the probes is set off; note that in the screenshot there, only one probe got set off... most of the lunacy there is JUST from those big spawner things. This mission type is pretty crowded to begin with, but then the spawning begins, and it descends into utter chaos. There's just too many small ships flying around. All of the turrets are fine, as there's only ever going to be a few activated at once, unless the player stupidly dives down between a whole pile of them (and even then it's never too many at once), but the actual ships need to be toned down somehow. The best suggestion I have is to change how the spawner things work. Either make them follow some sort of hard limit on ship numbers, simply not spawning more if there's a certain number of them already there, or make it so that each one contains only one squadron of ships; after releasing those, it could perhaps switch to it's own attack mode, shooting high-powered bolts at the player. And note that this is only the part of the mission zone that my screen happens to be focused on.... there's even more of this off-screen! And even ignoring the slowdown, that many ships makes it near impossible to go after the real targets, which are the turrets and those large things in the center of the rings. Including screenshot of the sort of situation it can produce.

* Put in a new mostly-hard cap where if there are at least 10 squadrons deployed for a side in a battle, then more squadrons will progress incredibly slowly in terms of deployment until things clear up a bit. |
