Yes, this is by design -- otherwise the truly important stuff on the sidebar gets missed. If you dislike this, which is perfectly fine, there is an option for you in the Extras tab of settings called "Suppress Minor Notifications On Sidebar." Uncheck that, and it will show you everything. I think this is a matter of preference, but if there are some specific events that you feel like are _actionable to the player_ that should be on the sidebar and are not, please let me know.
