Summary | 0014424: Union of Independent States Formation
Description | I had arranged things so that I would be able to add the Acutians to the Federation via the Skylaxians (90+ Influence with each other and to the Hydra). I was just waiting for an appropriate CEO gets into power. In the mean time I went ahead and added a 4th race to the Federation, which then kicked off the formation of the Union of the Independent States. The Boarines (who I'd been babysitting the entire game, they would have joined but the option was broken, which is fixed in 1.03), the Burlust (who I'd been destroying all game long, -800 Influence), and the Acutians (more powerful than the rest of the galaxy combined) decided to form the Union. They all dislike each other and like the races in the Federation (except for the Burlusts, who will eventually die). Then I find out that the only way to fix this, is to kill 2/3 of the members of the Union. All of this happened without any warning at all. A warning would be nice. Some messages indicating it might be about to happen would be good. A way to sabotage or break apart the union other than obliteration would be good. As it stands it was extremely frustrating to have my carefully formed Federation, now have to deal with its best potential members as enemies without any warning or way to deal with it (other than post event killing).

I kinda think the events are hidden for a reason, that is, one of the big things in the game is discovering these things as they happen. And, you know, 'try to handle them', often failing in the process. :) |

I don't think a warning of the impending formation would ruin the "discovery" aspect of the game, it'd just eliminate the "need for precognition" aspect - which I always detest anyways. Basically, something (a quest) like "You hear rummors of an alliance between a, b, c forming - you'll need to convince one of them to join the federation with the next (few months, year,?, at which point the quest disapears), or crash their summit to prevent it." The summit is a tactical mission to destroy a well defended space station (station and surrounding defenses are significant, and after a few turns the planets wll start sending their defense forces to protect it), and is interrupted via accepting (and completing) the quest. Of course, sucessful completion of the quest doesn't prevent them from trying again, it just buys you some time. And bonus: Another fun tactical mission that lets you have a significant impact on the politics of the system! |

Random curveballs like this would be fine if they didn't result in inevitable war sooner or later. I've added a relationship to 0014558 accordingly. |
