Summary0014434: Player has no incentive to destroy pirate bases
DescriptionI understand why raiding pirates doesn't give you cash or influence because you can get anywhere from 3-5 artifacts (by boarding the freighters) that can be used in all sorts of ways. But why are there no real rewards for destroying a pirate base? As is it's better for the player to just keep doing raids, rather than eliminating the base. I would like to see a decent sized credit and/or influence bonus to this mission. Surely the people being harassed by the pirates would appreciate the removal of the thorn in their side?

The effect of pirates is not visible at all. Even their armadas on the map seem unclear. "Piracy?" it says, at least omitting the "Duh." But we don't know what effect this has on the world. Perhaps if there was a Trading screen, it could tell us what the pirates were up to.

Even then, the mission doesn't seem to be very rewarding.

To a point, I can sorta agree, but there really IS one beneficial effect: You're essentially removing an overall "spawn point" for the pirates. These guys can get REALLY annoying, and their ships are waaayyyyy stronger than normal versions (you should see how much damage they do on Misery), so taking them out can be a very good thing. Having a pirate empire show up because they get out of control can really mess up your plans.

That being said, there could indeed be a bit more of a reward or obvious effect to it. Though, these missions arent too difficult, so they dont really warrant THAT much of a reward.

Well as it stands now, early game (at least) it's just much more to the apparent advantage of the player to keep one pirate base around so that they can repeatedly raid for loot than to destroy the base and remove their easy access to artifacts.

The artifacts give extremely little influence. And if some players want to grind, why not let them grind? Their manner of gameplay isn't yours or mine, but that's their choice. If they want an ever so easy game, let them have it.

For 1.005:

* Destroying a pirate base now:
** Grants 1000 credit.
** Gives you 5 influence with all non-SmugglerEmpire races, in addition to the 5 influence it was already giving you with the race you selected as your ally in the fight.

Thanks :)

Keith, that's great. It makes the pirate base raid an option I might actually go for (in my games, pirates usually don't get many bases anyway).

But what about the option to ask a race to take care of a pirate base for you? That has a cost, and its sole benefit is removing a pirate base. What about that?

That option has never made much sense to me unless I'm cash rich (which maybe is the point?)

@Prokofiev

The problem with grinding, and the reason why it needs to be avoided whenever possible, is actually pretty simple:

It has a very strong effect of making the game seem MUCH less strategic than it has the potential to be.

Iv'e seen this happen with other strategy games, and I've already seen it a bunch of times with this one, where you'll get someone who reads up on the game, but then says something like "Well, if you can just win by grinding, where's the strategy? This looked interesting, but I think I'll pass." I've seen it on various forums, and I've seen the same reaction from friends as well with this one.

And yes, you can say "Well just dont play it that way", but typically this is not how most players think. In addition.... really, if I have to impose restrictions upon myself in any form to make a game "work", there's something wrong with it.
