Summary | 0014447: Idea: New Planet Types
Description | Oceanic "GJ 1214 b" An ocean planet (also termed a waterworld) is a hypothetical type of planet which has a substantial fraction of its mass made of water. The surface on such planets would be completely covered with an ocean of water hundreds of kilometers deep, much deeper than the oceans of Earth. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocean_planet Barren "Mars" Barren planets are archetypical "dead terrestrials": dry, rocky worlds with a minimal atmosphere and an unremarkable composition. They are commonly etched with flood channels, which are often broad enough to be visible from orbit; most such worlds have accumulated significant quantities of ice over their lifetimes, but cannot retain it on their surface. Generally surface liquid evaporates rapidly, contributing to the thin atmosphere, but occasionally it will seep back into the ground and refreeze, ready for another breakout in future when the local temperature rises. Swamp "Dagobah" THe whole planet is a swamp, similar to the time before the dinosaurs. Forest "Endor" forested world covered by giant trees. Savannah / Grassland Characterized by grass and wide open spaces with a distinct lack of trees.

Love this idea especially if it adds depth strategically for example planets that are initially terribly compatible with most races but after a certain tech upgrade become an extreme advantage. Also would be great if ground combat and bombing takes terrain into consideration which should be modified by techs. e.g terrible bombing and ground combat against an ocean world until researching depth charges and underwater breathing! |

(Technical Note: Endor was a Gas Giant, the Ewoks lived on "the Forest Moon of Endor" ;) I have some concerns that using these planet types for the starting races may give the RNG too much power, and silly things can happen. (Like the Acutians starting on a forest planet... Because Yeahhh... like they'd have ANY trees left by the time they got spacefaring....) :) If these types were carefully seeded for the starting races, and then were terraformable by conquering races, this would be fine with me. If they were added as uninhabitted worlds, (that could house pirate, AFA or splinter factions), and would only be conquerable once a race gained the ability to terraform it, this could be really cool. Especially if each race gains the ability to terraform/colonize different worlds at different tech levels (years). (For instance the Acutians could gain the ability to research "terraform Forest planets into Baren ones" just a year after becoming spacefaring... ;) Even better would be to make them entirely uninhabitable (never have significant population on them) but they act as giant resource nodes that the races could fight over. Basically, the race would have to "claim" the planet (by sending a ship - similar to destroyed planets) and then build a "Mining Colony" on it (similar to a build outpost, could even BE a type of build outpost dispatch). Once buillt the colony works as a trade route, sending it's particular resource coctail to the owner each month in a trade fleet. Enemies could blocade the planet and bomb the "mining" colony by sending ships (and thus take control), but would have to complete a "mining colony" project themselves to actually get the benefit. Basically it becomes a type of "resource outppost". This would allow for a kind of "cold war" to occur between races, where they fight over resources with likely limitted fleets, but neither side get particularly angry over it (as people aren't being killed - it'd be like destroying an outpost). |

Definitley a fan of uninhabited worlds prefer the worlds that cant be properly colonized (mining ones) or ones that can only be colonizes relatively late in the tecg tree. I don't want to suggest anything too complicated but "luxury resources" would be an awesome addition to all planets which can be traded for ore as well as give large rep bonus xD with differrnt races liking different things... :) |
