Summary0014608: Even extremely decisive sieges go on far too long.
DescriptionI've found that planets tend to take an insane amount of time to fall, even when things should be relatively quick. Note the screenshot and the ratio of attacking to defending power. It's been like that a very long time, and for some reason no bombing appears to be happening on the planet, and I can't tell if ground combat is happening.

The population is still rising despite my efforts, and the planet appears bomb-proof despite having no ships.

Maybe a planet's population shouldn't have to drop all the way for it to be taken? Or maybe an option for a besieged race to yield should be introduced? Part of this problem is that when a race attacks a planet, they will often only use like 20% of their available ships, even when they have nothing to defend against at home.

I uploaded a save where something similar is happening. The burlust planet has been under siege by the acutians for about 16 game minutes. And then the Thoraxians joined in. The effective ground combat strength is dropping, but very slowly - it's hard to tell what's going on down there.

Save is from GoG Mac version 1.04.

Can't get to my save at the moment (at work) but it sounds like Nick has the same problem; I've seen it posted about on the Arcen and Steam forums as well.

Shouldn't some ground troops and bombs be able to make it to the planet even if the enemy has armadas? Or maybe enemy races just need to feel more of a burn from bad economy.

All I know is that this siege is taking forever even when I beam in and destroy literally every armada every time the enemy builds one (just like the intro story says the hydrals used to).

BTW, it "only" took one or two solar years from my save for the Burlusts to bite the bucket (after everyone else dogpiled in)

Chris, I've been thinking things like this are annoying to the player because we don't really know what's going on; maybe a little more feedback on the actual results of ground combat/bombing?

For 1.006:

* Due to continued complaints that massively-overwhelming sieges still take forever to actually flip a planet, the divisor applied to slowing down orbital bombardment has been reduced 100x (increasing the effective rate of bombardment by 100x). So a planet that actually has intact defense fleets can still hold out for a while and you can intervene (either to help fight off the attackers or to help clear away the defenders), a planet with no orbital defenses at all will go down relatively quickly to a large attacking space force. Kinetic bombardment is pretty effective, after all, let alone nastier stuff.

Thanks :)
