Summary | 0015131: Counter Hacking
Description | With the addition of hacking as a core gameplay mechanic it seems fitting the AI should be able to respond in kind. After all, it is a massive computer network with relentless amounts of processing power. Suggestions for implementation: -A secondary AI type which has the ability to perform hacks -An AI plot. -I'd actually like this to be on by default but since noone else seems to have any problem with hacking as it currently stands (7.025) the previous two options seem more appropriate. AI hacks could include disabling a certain type of turret, ship, or production facility. Disrupting energy, or supply from a planet. Obviously there is potential here for some really nasty things too like taking control of ships, or disabling warp detection (though these might go too far). I think of course unlike human hacks, AI hacks should work only temporarily or there will be too much pain. They could happen on waves with a percentage chance of effecting one of the things above, similar to beachheads. However they could also be implemented similar to human hacking whereby an AI force might plant a device on one of your planets to then create this temporary effect (perhaps until the device is destroyed - it would be cloaked too presumably).

I think what matters to me most about this is that currently it feels a bit silly that I can hack the AI but the AI cannot hack me. There is something scarily appealing about a message popping up telling me my protector starships have been mysteriously disabled for the next half hour. |

It sounds kind of cool, as long as the AI's hacks are temporary and not as powerful or permanent as human hacks. While the AI really does have tremendous amounts of processing power we shouldn't forget that most of that is constantly in use in order to control the huge amounts of military power that could crush the humans at any time. Also, I don't know if all of the player's technology is concentrated similar to how the AI's is - would it really be vulnerable to hacking in a broad manner or would the AI need to hack every single ship and building seperately? |
