Summary0015235: Crazy Idea Re: Turret Caps
DescriptionSo having played with Core Turrets for a while, and reading concerns regarding huge chokepoint setups and the back and forth on that, I had a crazy idea.

I think the cap types on normal turrets and core turrets should be switched. Normal turrets should be per-planet, and core turrets should be global-cap.

Crazy, right? Here's why:

1) It would hugely encourage having multiple defensive fronts; currently, people who end up with lots of Core Turrets have a huge edge in that regard. Defensive setups like fallback planets, beachheads, and multiple ingress points become more viable without needing to "earn" that ability.

2) Instead, it would mean you need to "earn" the ability to chokepoint. This is basically backwards from now. People set up huge single chokepoints because it's a smarter allocation of resources, unless you have a bunch of Core Turrets. With this change, setting up a hard chokepoint basically requires fortresses, Core Turrets, or some other significant investment of resources, not just "dump every turret on this planet". In the early game, you may not be ABLE to build a single chokepoint that can hold everything the AI throws at single-planet chokes. Thus forcing a multiple-front defense.

3) The main limiting factor to your defenses becomes energy. Since every turret has an energy cost, building a cap of every turret on every planet (in ideal balance conditions) would cost enough energy to significantly impact your economy. This brings energy back as a more important resource than it has been lately.

Now, there is probably a valid concern that this would make turning EVERY planet into a chokepoint possible. However, if this is balanced correctly, I say... why not? If you want to spend a bunch of research having a bunch of turret types, and have the energy and economy to support building all those turrets on every planet, that should be a valid playstyle. Your offense will suffer comparatively, but you will have a robust defense.

I should add that I know this would of course require basically a complete rebalance of turrets and related aspects of the defensive game, so I understand if this is just too big of a change for where the game stands now.
