Summary | 0015788: AIWar crashes on Windows after some minutes
Description | Hi. Latest version of AIWar (the download release, not Steam version) is crashing on Windows (on my Linux machine it is working). First the planet view freezes whilst build menus and hover info boxes remain functional, then the game crashes at all and the "oops" dialog is coming up. The crash report is attached. Thanks in advance for investigating the issue!

Just tested the Steam edition 8.006. There is the same bug (on my machine). The game starts to allocate memory until it crashes a few minutes after starting the campaign. I have got the impression that switching to the desktop (causing the game to pause) and back maybe has some influence, since it seems to increase the chance of the issue to occur. Btw. the Linux version still runs fine... |
Okay, 8.007 is out and hopefully fixes this: http://arcengames.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=AI_War_-_Current_Post-8.000_Beta#Official_8.007 Thanks! |

Hi, thanks for the patch. It seems to resolve the memory leak. Version 8.007 doesn't allocate lots of RAM anymore until IT crashes. But unfortunately the planet view freezes after some zoom in zoom out activities. The rest of the UI remains responsive, you can access the hover info boxes as well as the game menu via ESC calling the main menu. Also switching to the galaxy map works, though only the priority buttons appear, not the map itself. As mentioned: memory allocation is stable at about 650MB, CPU load = 0. Since one can normally quit the game via the main menu, there is no crash-log written. Let me know, if you need more info. Thanks! |
BTW, how can I (temporarily?) revert to version 8.003, that worked very well on my machine (I have the 8.000 download archive)? Thanks in advance! |
Well, I'm glad that solved the crash at least! In terms of the other issue... that is very odd indeed, hmm. Can you try verifying your game cache just to be sure everything is okay there? How long does it take before it stops drawing some of the images like that? How much free RAM does your machine have when it is having these problems? Does switching to windowed mode and then back to fullscreen mode fix it? Thanks! |
Hi, regarding: - gamecache: I tested on the non Steam release 8.0007, so this shouldn't be relevant then, right? - time until freeze: about 2 minutes - RAM: about 1.5 GB of 2.0 GB physical RAM free before start, then about 0.8 of 2.0 GB free while running - Switching from full screen to windowed mode and back works, while planet view is frozen, but doesn't solve the issue. I have found the output_log.txt. There is an issue constantly reported until one exit from the game (I have attached that file): --- snip --- HandleD3DDeviceLost HandleD3DDeviceLost: still lost Skipped rendering frame because GfxDevice is in invalid state (device lost) (Filename: Line: 1494) --- snap --- I'll try to update my GFX card drivers (an somewhat outdated HD3850...) and keep you posted about the result. Thanks! |

Well, the update of the drivers itself was successful. But it hasn't solved the problem, unfortunately... I've attached the output_log.txt. Please let me know how to revert back to version 8.003/8.004 since I played for hours with that version without having any trouble... Thanks in advance! |
There is a new version 8.008 that should fix your problem: http://arcengames.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=AI_War_-_Current_Post-8.000_Beta#Official_8.008 If you wish to revert to 8.003, you can do so in the steam beta tab, but bear in mind that you don't want to stay on that version forever, as the game will continue to evolve. Thanks for your patience with this, and for reporting your findings as they happen -- without you and the three or so others to test these releases, I'd be absolutely blind, because this issue doesn't happen to anyone on staff here. Even if you do wind up still having troubles and go back to 8.003 so that you can just _play_ in the short term, I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't mind checking out new versions to see if I've resolved your issue so that you don't have to be on a backwards version. At any rate, I think I have a pretty good idea of what the problem was (framerate runaway causing some ram stuff), and this new one -- knock on wood -- ought to do it. |

Hi, thanks for the reply. I just tested the 8.008 and was able to play much "longer" now until the freeze occurred (about 20 minutes each game). But then it happened again. In case you need any log-files, please let me know. The output_log.txt shows still the same issue (as reported above). Fortunately the "Save game" functionality seems to work well, even when the main view freezes... I'll continue to test next versions (of course ;-)). Since I'm off the next three days, I'll come back to you Friday night at the earliest... Thanks for your support! |
Okay, thanks for the heads up! |
Okay, new version for whenever you are ready: http://arcengames.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=AI_War_-_Current_Post-8.000_Beta#Official_8.009 I _think_ that I got this, this time. Was totally an error on my part, and not anything engine-related, I'm pretty positive. Thanks again for your patience with this! |
Has anyone seen this since 8.013? Thanks :) |
Hi, thanks for the new version. I tested the 8.013 extensively yesterday night. Everything runs smooth, no freezing of the UI anymore. I think, you can close this issue :). Thanks again for the outstanding support! |
Wonderful! That's absolutely great news, and thank you again for your patience. :) |
