Summary0016005: Invasion Mode: Insane numbers of Obscura flagships even in early game missions?

Also: Is it possible that the flagship count for Obscura fleets is significantly off?

In the invasion game I just started the first quest I started, "Joint Ground Invasion against Obscura" in like, year 3002, had 35(!) flagships in it. There is not way I can cope with this at this point in the game. Regular missions usually have 12+ flagships per armada! Thats's just too much. Sure, I can try analysing their patterns and dodge them in theory, but in practice there are just too many overlapping fields of fire. Throughly dodging the pattern of one ship will often cause you to be hit by multiple other ships.

Or am I not getting something here?

And this bit is up to Chris, I think. I'm betting you're really just not meant to be taking them on directly like that at all so early in the game; whichever race is coming up with that quest might be getting just a BIT too enthusiastic. For normal missions, 3-5 Obscura at once is a good number to deal with in one mission when that can be managed, the patterns end up working well enough together to be nasty but manageable and mostly dodgeable as long as you're being all tactical and stuff (like trying to lure a couple away from the others, stuff like that, to give you room to avoid bullets), though the more allies you have the more you can probably handle (splits them up more), but.... not like, 12 at once, especially that early. Their patterns are very definitely not meant for extreme numbers for just your one ship to deal with at once.

Argh I had to edit these 2 posts way too much.

Yep, this is a case of "don't go attacking the Borg in one lone little starship." Working precisely as intended, heh.

Sorry, but I don't get it.

What purpose has a quest that is by design unwinnable (see: that has 35 Obscura flagships in it)?

And what sense does it make to have Misery design intricate bullet patterns that all have an individually exploitable weakness if missions are then set up in a way that space is just so full of overlapping fields of fire that there is not way to exploit them?

And finally, just to stress my point a last time, I am talking about being (not easily but realistically) able to stop *a single* Obscura Armada (which currently may easily equal 12 Obscura ships). If I am not even supposed to be able to do that then how am I supposed to even try to help the races from being helplessly consumed by the Obscura - especially early game? I get that I am not supposed to be able to stop whole Obscura fleets on my own - that's totally cool - but shouldn't I be able to stop - with some trouble - at least their smallest granular part (i.e. a single armada) so to speak?

In my imagination the fight against a single armada (i.e- 5-6 ships) should play out in the tactical way designed by Misery. Anything above that *should* by all means be a bullet hell - I am with you on that.

I am confused. Can you shed some light?

I attached save to further outline my point.

The situation at the Peltian homeworld is something that I should be able to do something about, right? Well, no. If coming to the planets defense the resulting mission will pit me against 30 Obscura ships - and I am only fighting against a single armada with a power of 300!

EDIT: Sorry about the change to assigned. That happened automatically?

No problem on the change to be assigned.

It's an intended thing there, yes. It gives one Obscura ship per every 1 base power on the fleet, I believe. They have a ship multiplier of 3.89, and an effective power of 234, so that's 60 Obscura ships total, and it maxes out at 30 per encounter.

You really aren't intended to be able to attack them directly too much.

Fair enough. Looks like I will have to find another way to cope with them then ;)...

If I might just add a bit here:

The logic of "dont attack the mighty Borg by throwing pebbles at them" works perfectly, but that quest doesnt; that bit specifically might need a change, just since it doesnt make any sense at all. Maybe put a cap on it? Like, that quest doesnt get offered if the target has a certain amount of Obscura on it or higher.

Otherwise it's just frustration for players that might be new to it. To enter that mission and suddenly be greeted by a situation that no player could possibly beat.

Ooh, got it -- thanks!

* The quests that are taken against the Obscura faction, such as Joint Bombing Run and similar, now include the same number of ships as the regular races would flagships. This typically means something closer to 4 rather than the 30 it was doing before.
** Additionally, some of the quests that are very personality-specific such as scientist defections are no longer valid for the Obscura to be involved in at all.
