It's been done in StarDrive 2... I don't like it. I started a new turn too often because it's too accessible. I'd prefer the "enter" key. |
Isn't this changeable with keybinding? |
Yeah, that is why the suggestion is just to make it a default. It feels weird to me to need to reach for the enter key, I would guess a majority of players would agree, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I have ended up binding it to both the spacebar and a mouse button ;-) |
Errr... "Enter" is the Civilization 5 default "pass turn" key. That makes it more or less the default "pass turn" key for 4X games. It's also the same for the warlock series and... basically the whole of Paradox games as far as I can remember, at least Galciv did. I think SoTS had the enter key as well. Actually apart from Stardrive 2 I don't remember a game using the space bar to end turn. The default should be "enter". |
Internal note: -- “End Turn” needs to be its own keybinding, at the top of the main list of keybindings for the game, with a default to Enter. This way it’s different from the confirm keybinding, and people can map whichever they prefer independently. |
Here's a question, though: what if we made BOTH the default, so you could hit either? Would that bother anyone? I agree that spacebar would be convenient to hit, and I really got used to that in roguelikes (and our own Bionic Dues). But enter is way more natural for most of 4X games. |
I have had both set while playing and it works fine. I was not suggesting to remove enter as a default, just to add space bar. Since it is already mappable, I am happy with whatever you guys decide. My main argument was for comfort/convenience. :-) Does a new "End Turn" keybinding enable accidentally abruptly ending midturn if you bump the key? Or does it just work the same way that you need to finish other actions first? |
The new keybinding would just let you map this separately from the confirm key -- nothing else. It wouldn't change any functionality at all. |

>Would that bother anyone? I agree that spacebar would be convenient to hit, and I really got used to that in roguelikes (and our own Bionic Dues). But enter is way more natural for most of 4X games. It bothers me. Space key is too accessible and I've passed way too much turns by mistake because of that (in Stardrive, since there it's the default, it's a 4X in space for people that don't know). Enter key is nice because it's out of the way - and passing a turn should be a decision. To me the space key is a "pause" and "reflex" button, not one I'd want to pass a turn with. Finally, my kids hit the space bar (I admit it's not an issue that everyone has). |
Well, let's give it a shot with it as a default on for a while, and see what the general consensus is. You can simply unbind the spacebar and just leave enter as the only one. And if a lot of people are uncomfortable with it as a default, then we'll switch it to just having enter alone as the default. Since this is a beta I'd like to experiment and see what the overall feeling is. |

For 0.878: * Added a new keybind for "End Turn", defaulting to respond to either "Return" or "Spacebar". ** Removed the end-turn functionality from the general "confirm" keybind. Thanks :) |
