Summary | 0017156: Explorer Camps
Description | After all of the changes, has the restriction on placement and count of explorer camps has passed its usefulness? I think it has. Science Labs are now better all the way around. You definitely don't want to spam Explorer Camps either. So using them for the low level exploration and initial science boost and then replacing them as you go seems to be about right. Then again I also remember the days when I built 30 of them and Chris said that was impossible. ;p

I have mixed feelings about them. They give me something to do before I have enough tech to build "real" buildings, and once I've built the maximum I can fit into the restricted area, I basically leave them there and build around them. I've never felt any real need to demolish them, but my desire to build as many as I can is driven more by the placement limitations than anything else. Maybe it would make more sense to tie their construction to lander level somehow. Perhaps each lander lets you build them further out or something, but with a fixed maximum number that goes up by one or two each level. That lets you make more interesting early exploration decisions, which seem to be a bit lacking at the moment: * You can build camps earlier and closer, missing out on early exploration. * You can build camps later and further out, missing out on early science. * You can build early and then demolish and rebuild, getting both exploration and science at the cost of your limited starting budget. |

Thanks! * The requirement to place explorer camps on your first turn has now completely gone away. Now that you have a freer reign to build more stuff on turn one -- all the bare essentials -- it now makes you build a single building -- and gives you a snarky helpful tip on how to do that if you click the button -- prior to letting you move on to the next turn. |
