Summary0017279: Building / Job / food / crop / water even more unclear than before
DescriptionI've got no clue what those number represent now apart from when I go to the tooltip.

Percentages for jobs especially I don't understand, they vary wildly for some reason I don't get. Also percentage doesn't really tell me "how much" more I need.

Could you at least bring back the numbers as an option, like clicking on it switches the "percentage" or "number" mode ? The numbers I'd want to be show is the "surplus". Ie if I produce 5000 and I need 4500, I'd want +500, or if I need 5500 I'd want -500 or something similar.

The mouseovers for these are way more informative btw.

Yeah, that's a pretty nice change.

I still think there should not be a need to mouseover such "basic" information in the first place.

I'm finding the %s sufficient though. Not trying to be contrarian here, but I usually don't check them unless I'm nearing 100% on a category. Then I go look to see exactly what I need.

A lot of the population numbers have multiple moving parts, so which part do you display? The %s show an overall for the broader category.

You can't stuff all the required information in the icon bars, there isn't enough room.

Cinth, you're missing the point.

I'm asking for placing back the whole numbers instead of percentages, both fit here. Example crops:

80% tells me that I need 20% more of something, but that's how much farms ?

-400 tells me that I need 1 farm.

First is confusing (to me, at least), second is clear, both have same space used.

Finally, I'm asking for an option to switch to numbers / not a removal of percentage.

I didn't miss anything. The information you want is in the mouseover.

The only time the information you want is ever relevant is when you are near or below 100%.

It's relevant "to you" only in those cases. I'm not you. I find it relevant enough to make the global information with no percentage always shown instead of being hidden in a tooltip. Now, if you disagree, stating "It's enough for me" is enough. Stating "it's useless"... ok you've got no hope of convincing me by stating the opposite opinion and no arguments at all. What you're doing is all you can to start a flamefest by stating strong opposite opinions and disregarding the fact that others might have a different opinion.

Therefore: completely missing the point.

Also:
>Finally, I'm asking for an option to switch to numbers / not a removal of percentage.

It's an option - some prefer percentages and find it enough. I don't want to screw them over - I did take that opinion into account. Thanks for doing the same.

"Complete answer" about UI in the linked mantis issue. I'm done here anyway.

Just a note that I haven't missed this issue. I'm addressing the jobs thing first, and a bit of other stuff that I also think is a bit more critical first. But I have what I think are some ideas you might like in terms of the top bar being both clear and kind of a halfway ground between these two points.

No problem, I'm in development myself as a "day" job. I understand that priorities will bury some remarks. You've got a few weeks of remarks to shovel back to light :-).

For 0.904:

=== Top Bar Info Presentation Clarification ===

* The beatings will continue until clarity improves.

* Removed the victory progress icon from the top bar.

* Moved the bottom bar icons down to match the position of the bottom bar.

* Shifted the number above the scouting bottom bar button to fit in the slot prepared for it.

* Added a button to the middle of the bottom bar that brings up the victory progress window.
** It displays the percent of victory progress just above.

* Shifted the number above the sonar bottom bar button to fit in the slot prepared for it.

* Changed the percent-based (and some other) top-bar numbers back to showing literal numbers, but with no + or - signs, and instead showing "surplus", "balanced", or "shortage" above them.

* Top bar stuff no longer fades out even if you have a huge surplus or whatever.

* Added "Turns Left" above the science, social progress, and planet rage top bar numbers

* The estimated bodies-per-turn for the top bar graves indicator now considers data for the last 20 turns and weights the most recent five turns (and to a lesser extent the most recent ten turns) higher.
** And the tooltip now displays the averages across the last five, ten, and twenty turns as well as the current number of unclaimed bodies in the city.

* The trash and graves top bar indicators now:
** If there's unprocessed trash/bodies in the city, shows "Shortage" and the amount of the unclaimed amount.
** Else, if the current production is being taken care of by the current consumption, it shows the amount of extra space you have for storing that and "Surplus" if there is any, or zero and "Balanced" otherwise.
** Else it shows the number of turns until your remaining storage capacity will be filled by the current rate of production vs consumption, and "Turns Left".

Thanks :)
