Summary0018431: Starward Rogue Gameplay Feedback
DescriptionThis is my overall thoughts on Starward Rogue. This is not a bug report so you can close this as soon as you've read it. So, here's some background.

I have limited experience with both Roguelikes and SHMUPS. I have played games in both genres but I'm definitely inexperienced as a whole. It's not a genre I pick up all that often but I'm poking in roguelike/roguelites every now and then to see if something bites. Anyway, I played Starward with the focus of finding any performance issues or glaring problems. So I also played around with difficulty settings to see how the game played out. What follows are my thoughts.

I'm a little worried about the early learning experience which is a bit difficult to figure out how energy and missile weapons play against enemies. It also doesn't make it clear that missiles can be used against certain obstacles. But if you've got a tutorial in the works, my issues might be solved. After an hour or two of solid play though, the game starts making sense. Or at least, I felt way less lost than when I first started it.

I feel like the difficulty is brutal. I struggled to finish the tower on very easy. Normal is insane, I got to level three on my best run, I think. And then promptly died. I'm having a hard time figuring out if I'm just bad (entirely possible) and can't dodge the shots coming at me, if I'm missing health pickups or if the game is just that difficult. It seems like I just run out of health and it's difficult to find enough health to keep going. The multitude of shots raining down on me don't make it any easier. But that's not a complaint, obviously you want this to be a SHMUP experience. I do wonder if having Normal be so hard will turn players off. I shudder to think about the higher level of difficulties.

One note, the pause screen is a gigantic info dump screen and I'm not sure if I like it that way. It also covers up the weapons you have equipped which is a little strange.

I'm also a little worried that the music is a bit too repetitive but it otherwise sounds good. The lack of story is also a bit odd. I mean, if that's intentional, ok. It's just I expected a little something more after the opening narration. But if that's just to set things up, I'm ok with it.

I will say, that I kinda like it. I enjoyed it despite not really focusing on enjoying it. I like the pacing of the combat and how ridiculous the boss fights can be. I like the more skillfull nature of the combat. Dodging the shots can be difficult/impossible at times, but I keep coming back to it. It's also really pretty seeing all of these shots coming at you. Even if I am about to die rather horribly. This isn't something that I say lightly because I'm at mixed odds with these genres but I think Starward Rogue does it well.

There's my thoughts on my testing this past week. It's by no means conclusive. One week is not a lot of time to finalize my thoughts but these are impressions I felt like sharing right now. Hope this helps Chris.

Hmm, what is it that's killing you the most often?

Normal difficulty isnt supposed to be all that hard... but I"m not so good at holding back on these things. If there's some specific thing that's wrecking people too much, I'd like to know what it is. That being said there's a couple of things in the game that I already know need to be nerfed, such as the Warden (boss in stage 5).

One thing that the game possibly didnt point out though is that there is a "slow movement" button. When held down, you move at a much lower speed. Typically this is seen in bullet-hell shmups to make it possible to dodge high-density patterns, and that's what it's used for here as well. But some players dont seem to have discovered it exists. The tutorials should fix that though. Without it you're bound to crash into stuff alot.

Also if you want to see the chaos that is Hard mode (which isnt done, I"m going to be finishing it up today), there's videos on the forum showing a few of the bosses that way. They're pretty mean, yes. The whole mode will be.

I think it's actually appropriate:

- Normal is for players experienced in SCHMUPs and Rogue-likes and is fairly good at them.
- Easy is for players with limited experience, or not as good.
- Very easy for no experience.

I'm thinking back to all of the Raidens, 1942s, Alien Breed series, and that would be the correct categories. Adding descriptions to the difficulties will help.

Yea, I'd agree with zharmad that adding descriptions to label what each difficulty is will prevent players from being too frustrated. And yea, I haven't been using that slow movement button, maybe that would help me out. I don't think there's anything in particular that's killing me and/or overpowered. But I'll do a couple more runs in normal today and see if I notice anything.

Further update: I think I'm just bad at Starward Rogue. I ran several runs on normal today and died for various reasons (stupid decision making, can't avoid shots to save my life, unlucky etc). So, there you go.
