Summary0018667: No audio when started through Steam
DescriptionSo on the newest version (I'm assuming using Unity 5), when I start it through Steam, I've got no audio. If I start it via command line (that is, not through Steam), I have sound. (Even with Steam running.) If I disable the steam overlay, then try to launch Starward Rogue through Steam, I get no sound. Unity 5.3 issue?

I'm just going to point out that if you can get audio starting it with command line (outside of Steam), then how could it be Unity itself?

Also, use pulseaudio? (Note: I have no idea about Linux systems)

No clue. I code LISP. I'm throwing out ideas as to what it could possibly be. That I have audio when started via command line and not through Steam (even using the same command in launch options via Steam) sounds like it's a bug with the program or Steam's UI, not on my end of things.

Are you running the 32bit or the 64bit version of the game when you run it from the command line? Depending on your OS setup, Steam should auto-select which version to run for you. If it's choosing the wrong one, then perhaps that is what the issue is.

The only other idea I can throw out it to delete the binaries for the game and do a Steam verify to force it to download it again and try that. Something might not have updated correctly. Outside of that, I dunno.

Steam just released an update today that fixes an issue on linux where file binaries were not verifying properly.

I'd also be interested in seeing your log files from when you launch through steam and when you launch not through steam, to see the differences. You can find those here:

I'm using the 64 bit version. I set the launch parameter to default to ./StarwardRogueLinux.x86_64, no sound. The 32-bit version doesn't even launch for me.

Steam client says it's up to date.

Deleted and reinstalled, same issue. (No sound when launched through Steam, have sound when launched via command line.)

I'm not surprised that the 32bit binary doesn't run. Generally speaking, on most installations of linux you only have the 64bit nowadays unless you explicitly download the 32bit binaries for your OS. If you downloaded those packages then the 32bit version of programs like this could run, but there's really no reason to in almost all cases.

Right now the only thing I can think of is the log files.

I am set up for multilib, but I'm likely missing something on the 32-bit end of things. (I don't keep it up because honestly I run very few 32-bit binaries anymore.)

I was more asking in general. A lot of Linux issues had been cropping up since release and if I can learn a thing or two on the troubleshooting side, then I can be of more help to the community?

Oh! Okay, that makes a whole lot more sense why you would be seeing something semi-unique, then. That makes me feel a lot better about this. Hopefully the following two things will happen, then, but they are a bit out of my control for right now:

1. Hopefully the unity staff read my note and have some sort of way to force steam to do this correctly via whatever command line arguments to our game.

2. Hopefully the unity staff then actually also fix this issue in a further build, leading to no need for such a command line argument.

5.3.2 was the same version that allegedly had the fix from 5.3.1, right? Hrm. Still odd that it would work one way but not another. If it were in the engine, it should be broken in both instances? I'm tossing out ideas. I've never actually dorked with Unity's internals.

Oh yes, I think they did fix it -- it was broken for folks in all contexts before when that was disabled. Not just when launching from steam. I think that one of two things is happening, is my best guess:

1. Either Steam's overlay is causing a conflict, possibly by not letting there be exclusive capture of the audio (because the steam overlay allows for voice chat I believe in some circumstances?). Though this seems less likely since you have that disabled and it still does not work; but still, what does "disabled" really do? I have no idea at a low level.

2. Or the fact that the game is being launched from the steam program may be causing different runtime arguments to happen, or otherwise some sort of different context when it is being executed. Usually this is more of a windows thing, but maybe it can happen on unix as well.

Weird...For kicks, I tried disabling the steam overlay and launching it via Steam: no audio.

Want me to hold off upgrading when Slackware 14.2 hits? I was anticipating using jack all the time, anyway. (So pulse would be installed, but never running.)

I would not hold off on anything for the sake of this. Odds are fair that this is some sort of unity engine bug based on the launch context. In that case you're going to have to launch this manually for a while until they update to the new engine version, I would think.

That is strange for sure. We don't control anything remotely to do with the audio system, though (we don't get to choose it, we don't initialize it, nothing -- all that happens before our code can even START running), so it's something in the engine. There's not a configuration option relating to this in the editor build tool that I'm aware of; that's the only place we could possibly interact with it.

No, but this is our first game on unity 5, let alone Unity 4.7. All our other titles are on Unity 4.6.7 at the present time.

Nope. Only other Unity 5 game I have installed atm is "7 Days to Die," and I haven't had any problems with Alpha 13. We'll see what happens once A14 drops.

This is wholly confusing. If this was Windows I'd ask you to check your outputs and make sure everything is assigned to the right stuff. You know, make sure your headphones aren't getting the sound vs your speakers.

I'm just a guy who loves to troubleshoot stuff.

This issue reeks of a conflict somewhere, and I just don't have the background to dig it out. Chances are pretty good that x4000 is right and there isn't anything that can be done until the Unity team fixes it. Either way, it's fun to poke it with a stick :)

Oh yeah. I wouldn't doubt it's a Steam interface/overlay issue. I seem to recall Starbound having a different issue with the Steam overlay hosing things.

Their response:

"If you get different results when running from Steam vs. not, it means that the ALSA libraries in the Steam runtime don't match the drivers on the system - there's nothing we can do about this on our end."

I'm not sure if that is more helpful to you than it was to me. ;)

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=.:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH %command% in launch options.

Every Unity 5 game has sound for me now.

FYI, this one appears to be back in Unity again. I downloaded the newest version of "7 Days to Die," and...no sound. Now, I do have pulse installed with Slackware 14.2, but I'm not using it. (It's not even running. Sound was working normally without the bugfix with the new version of Slackware, even without Pulse.) The simlink fix fixed it again. (For future knowledge if/when y'all update Unity.)
