Description | According to 0.853's version notes: "Note that officer fleets and non-officer fleets are NOT intended to be balanced with one another (officer fleets are more powerful, naturally), but the officer fleets are more rare and more powerful as well as more expensive in general." Officer fleets being more powerful than non-officer fleets hasn't been my experience so far, however, b/c I haven't been upgrading my arks. The science cost is just too much compared to the benefits I get from upgrading small ships and frigates. My arks and citadels end up feeling fragile by comparison. The main indicator for a fleet's strength has been its frigate count, whether it has an ark or not. I like the change of fleets no longer always having arks, as it helps retain arks feeling special, but that does mean upgrading arks is even less valuable b/c they're simply less common. When you consider that there are several ark science options, each of which only affects one ark category, it makes it even less likely that a particular ark science option will be worthwhile. My inclination is that ark & citadel science costs should be lower for at least the earlier mark levels. Right now my fleets are traveling around with lots of Mk V-VII ships and frigates (the assault frigates and siege frigates are especially devastating), but all my arks and citadels are still Mk I b/c I can't justify the cost for comparatively so little gain. Maybe the fleet experience system will fix this issue when it's implemented, but I wanted to raise this just in case. | ||||

Closing because neither of these seem to have Science upgrades anymore - that's entirely done via Experience now. |
