Summary | 0021561: Defending force were actually Threat force
Description | In this save, the AI forces took advantage of a macrophage attack on my homeworld to just come and wipe me off. Very nice coding taking advantage of the map having lots of ways to my homeworld and me being under attack. "attack out of nowhere" is a save taken right before things start to go real bad and "Uh Oh" is close to my demise. What I am surprised about is that usualy forces waiting to go on the offensive are showed in white humbers on the galaxy map, this time it was the defending forces showed in orange that decided to attack me. I am not sure if I just never noticed this behavior before or if it is new. The AI is a lvl 10 AI so that might explain it. If this is normal behavior, I'll be sure to keep a better eye on those orange numbers!

I just re-red the zombie thread and I am wondering if they are the ones that aggroed defending force into behaving like threat forces. I don't have a problem with that, but I suggest having them show in white in galaxy view and have their numbers added to the threat meter so we are more clear as to what is out there waiting to pounce so we can pounce on them before they do! |

The AI keeps different chunks of Threat for different minor factions that have annoyed it. Threat against the player is reported to you, threat against minor faction is not (otherwise you could get really worried that there's a ton of Threat out there, but much of it might be against the Nanocaust). In this case, the Macrophage had annoyed the AI, so the AI is sending ships to chase the Macrophage. Unfortunately, the Macrophage is now on your home planet, so when you start shooting at the AI ships then they turn on you. Working as designed, and I don't know a clear way to tell the player "These ships that nominally aren't after you might head toward one of your planet, so we're going to alert you about it now". The UI would be terrible. |
|
You know how in AIWC the threat counter had that nice mousover window that showed how the threat was split between planets? Showing the total threat count across all factions while having a similar UI that shows how threat is split between factions might work. |

Could we distinguish between active defenders and dormant defenders in the UI? A large number of active defenders while not direct threat is still very valuable info for the player, as it makes the system much more dangerous to attack, and is typically an indication that the AI is reacting to something and might "accidentally" attack you. In this case, Zoreiss would at least have seen the big group of active defenders switching systems on the map towards his homeworld, and could've attempted to do something before it was too late. With the game putting more emphasis on multi-faction gameplay ("factions aren't minor anymore"), it's essential to give the player more visibility on this kind inter-faction hostility. Randomly dying isn't fun, even if there was some simulation behind it. I also think that some mechanism for the AI to "calm down" and go back to dormant state once it's dealt with a problem would help a lot. After all, lore-wise that's what it did after dealing with the humans, so why should AI ships keep roaming around forever after they've dealt with some annoying but ultimately irrelevant zombies, or some other minor threat? Might not apply to the Macrophage specifically, I'm thinking about the overall buildup of active ships through minor events. |

Macrophages were the biggest offender here, and the AI no longer generates Threat forces against Macrophages |
