Summary | 0021746: Stacks should automatically split into smaller stacks when possible
Description | It's really weird to be attacked by a single stack of 2K+ ships that you then slowly whittle down. Honestly when you see that you feel like it completely nullifies this game's claims of massive battles, and all the optimization that went into it. This seems to happen even when not many player-visible battles are visible in the galaxy. It would already be a great improvement if the stack could automatically split into a number of smaller stacks that fill the screen a bit more when system resources allow and the player can see the battle - better to have 100 stacks of 20 or even 20 stacks of 100 than one lone icon. This dates from my .885 game and I haven't seen significant changes to stacks recently besides them dying quicker, so I assume this behavior is still present.

This should already be happening. Do you have a save game showing a few giant stacks of ships wandering around? |
I'lI didn't manage to track down a save where it happens so far, I'll keep looking. The stack wasn't really wandering around, just arriving from a wave and sitting there immobilized by a tractor beam. Perhaps that's what was preventing then from unstacking, which would then be fixed by Chris now forcing the decollision despite the tractor beam. |
There you go, here's a save where a big 999+ stack is at planet Duster. It's held by tractor beams. Contrary to when I was actually playing this game, the stack now does split off a couple small stacks of two at a time that instantly die. There's literally nothing else going on in the game that could be visible by me except a tiny combat on another planet, so I don't see a technical justification for this, it just feels lame. What I'd expect is that the large stack splits off equally into the largest number of groups the game can afford to render, instead of "peeling off" a couple of small stacks of two every second. |
Well, what do you know. I reloaded the same save and now they're splitting a lot more for some reason. It still seems to be favoring small stacks of two or three instead of splitting equally though, which doesn't look great and isn't optimal - they split off and then instantly die, where as a number of equal large stacks would have some staying power. |

I've improved this behaviour |
