Product Version1.001 Official Game Launch!
Summary0021869: GOG version crashes on launch with "Couldn't switch to requested monitor resolution"
DescriptionI purchased via Steam but used GOG Connect to pass my game over to GOG. The Steam version does not have this problem.

On launch, my system nearly freezes (mouse is set to busy state, with mouse movement reaction at a 6+ second delay). After 30-60 seconds, the game launches and shortly after the following error dialog displays:

Error
Couldn't switch to requested monitor resolution
Details:
Switching to resolution 1920x1080 failed, trying lower one

Screen: could not switch resolution (1000x600 fs=0 hz=0)

In the background, the main game window displays the AI War 2 logo and in the bottom centre the following text:

Boot up FleetOS (0.3s)
Refresh Optical Lensing
Loading Timer: 0.6s

From the Steam version, I know that many more lines get added to that on a usual launch, but this is as far as the GOG version can reach.

My system has a potentially unusual configuration. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme, which has an onboard Intel UHD Graphics 630 and an onboard NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti with Max-Q Design. However, I use neither of these as my system connects to a Razor Core X via Thunderbolt 3 and actually uses a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070. This graphics card is connected to three 1920x1080 monitors, the centre of which is configured as the primary and runs at 144Hz, where the side monitors run at 60Hz. The monitors run discretely and the game should normally launch on just the centre monitor, probably as fullscreen. That is how my Steam version works anyway, and this configuration is basically good for other games on both GOG and Steam. For reference, the laptop's actual monitor is off as the lid is closed and the NVIDIA Thunderbolt 3 panel indicates that the laptop's NVIDIA 1050 is inactive (but not disabled).

For me, this is not a full blocker as I can workaround by playing on Steam for the time being. However, I've seen one other report on Steam's forum reporting the same issue with their GOG version of the game.

Please let me know if you need any further information.

Edit 1 - as per GOG's support page for AI War 2, I configured the primary executable (aiwar2.exe in the associated GOG folder) via the NVIDIA Control Panel to use the "High-performance NVIDIA processor". The default was to use automatically use the integrated graphics as per global settings, apparently. This report was made after making this configuration change, and this did not change the results.

Very sorry to hear about this! I'm surprised it works on Steam but not on GOG. I can't really think that the two versions are different in any way that would be notable. I would be curious if you copied your newsettings.dat file from Steam to go (in the install folders, PlayerData on both cases) if that fixes it.

Beyond that, there might be some errors logged inside your GOG PlayerData folder in ArcenDebugLogging.txt.

Beyond THAT, the unusualness of your setup might require you to use DirectX11 instead of OpenGL. That strikes me as maybe the difference between the two, for you? Steam opens a dialog giving you the option for either. GOG opens OpenGL by default, but if you right-click the game and go down on the menu under Other, you'll see an option for launching with DX11.

There's a number of mentions of this on Steam too, and UncleYar (I think he and Asteroid are the same?) has been trying to help there. Some more information.

Thanks for the thoughts. I've made progress.

On instinct, I launched the GOG version with the DX11 option. This worked, loading the game in a relatively small window (compared to my resolution) without any pauses or other trouble.

I then tried launching the game normally through the GOG "Play" option. This crashes again, though this time there isn't the long pause in advance, perhaps just freezing the system up for a couple of seconds before trying to open a similarly (to above) small window and then telling me just the last couple of lines of the original error message. i.e.

Switching to resolution 1000x600 failed, trying lower one
All resolution switches have failed

In this new failure variant, I don't get to see the contents of the AI War window at all. The game just closes immediately after dismissing the error dialog.

On the middle suggestion, my GOG ArcenDebugLog.txt is attached. Hopefully that's still helpful after doing the above.

Finally, to the first point on copying the newsettings.dat from the Steam version, then starting the GOG game just via "Play" (OpenGL) then I get the new variant of the error again:

Switching to resolution 1000x600 failed, trying lower one
All resolution switches have failed
Screen: could not switch resolution (1000x600 fs=0 hz=0)

Still small window, no contents visible, closes immediately on dismissing the error. Also, the freeze is once again down to 1-2 seconds, rather than the extended freeze of the first set of failures, but I guess that goes hand-in-hand with a much shorter list of attempts to set resolution.

Finally, just to round off the tests, I tried launching the Steam version in OpenGL mode. Hey presto, I get the same new variant failure I've been getting with the GOG version:

Switching to resolution 1000x600 failed, trying lower one
All resolution switches have failed
Screen: could not switch resolution (1000x600 fs=0 hz=0)

So, yeah, OpenGL seems to be totally broken on my machine, except that it's also extra broken on first launch if it's never successfully launched that particular version before.

I don't need the OpenGL version working, I assume? I can just use the DX11 without trouble?

Small update:

I forgot that clicking "Play" would lead to a crash on my GOG build, so I accidentally just did that. I got the long freeze and system very busy that I had previously and figured I'd just given myself a 60 second wait 'til I could play. Except the game launched without giving me an error this time. Still version 1.001, so there's another factor at play here. Worth noting that I'd just rebooted 15 minutes earlier and hadn't run up anything more graphically intensive than Firefox.

The game is slightly choppy on screen transitions (game freeze for ~0,5s) and after clicking out to type into my browser for this report, certainly feels a little less smooth than my play on DX11 last night. When I close the OpenGL version and switch to the DX11 version, those minor transition freezes go away entirely.

Is there a command line option to force the GOG version to use the DX11 version by default rather than OpenGL? For when I next forget and just click Play... ;)

OpenGL was giving you this error which is super strange:

An abnormal situation has occurred: the PlayerLoop internal function has been called recursively. Please contact Customer Support with a sample project so that we can reproduce the problem and troubleshoot it.

I've never heard of that error before, and it seems to be deep inside the unity engine. I have no idea why this would be happening.

* Launching with OpenGL instead of DirectX11 can be problematic for some people, so on GOG the default launch is now DirectX11. On Steam it still shows you the option of which you want, but starts with DirectX11 as the default.

Thanks!
