Summary0022665: Destroyed units in stacks are not properly removed from the game
DescriptionWhat happens:
It seems that some units in a stack are not properly removed from the game when they are destroyed. The stacks appear to be working as expected but their numbers are not reduced properly when being destroyed. The bug is noticeable because a fleet needs way more time than usual to destroy the enemy's fleet. It looks like as if destroyed ships are respawned immediately after they got destroyed.

Reproduction:
Load the savegame Binary ( which runs for about 7 hours). On the planet Evil Warrior are multiple fleets in combat with the rose colored Full Ensemble AI. The AI uses a couple of corvette stacks. Watch the planet and activate the Planet View, so you can observe the ship numbers. Order all player ships to attack one stack of the near Inhibiting Tesla Corvettes. On the Planet View you can see that the number of Tesla Corvettes is reduced by one but snaps back to the old number very often.

Additional information:
During the game I've got the error message "ShortTermPlanningError: System.Exception: Error: tried to start thread 'metalFlowContext' but it appears to still be running". I ignored the bug, since I guess it is about displaying the current metal flow. But maybe this broke something and is way more severe than expected. For this reason I attached the log.

This appears so far to be an oddity from units stacking/destacking. If I change that setting from the 6 in the save to over 100, I no longer see this occurring.

Can you try it yourself and see if this still occurs?

Thank you for checking and I will compare how the unit destruction behaves with the different stack settings. I am aware that the stacking/unstacking in the game view can look chaotic. I noticed that the way I described the error might make it look like that the stacking/unstacking has an error. I'm sorry for that.

But I mean that a destroyed unit in a stack is not removed from the game. It respawns a few frames later and the stacking logic probably puts it somewhere. You can see that units somehow respawn in the Planet View when the number jumps back to the old unit amount for no apparent reason. Can you verify that the amount of the units (as shows in the Planet View) is being reduced as expected?

If you like I can make a gif animation to record the unit numbers of the Tesla Corvettes.

Finally, I was able to test what you asked me to do. When I change the stack settings to a high value, the destruction of enemy units works as expected. I don't see that the numbers jump back to the previous value after a unit got destroyed. When I set the stack value back on the low value, the error didn't appear again and ships get destroyed as expected.

On a low stack value the error persists in the new version. But the error occurs less than before. I add a gif of the Planet View, where you can see that the numbers of the pink colored corvettes are changing in a strange way. I don't know of any game mechanic for the AI, which could cause such a change in numbers.

* For both stacks and drones, put in some code to prevent cross-threading race conditions where they could in theory cause incorrect and confusing fluctuations.
** With stacks it seems like this only happened with very low stack count targets.
** With drones it seems this was not actually the problem.
