Summary | 0022908: ScourgeCat 2.006 has fallen
Description | I dub thy challenge ScourgeCat. Long may it lurk in that corner of the house with the water heater. Raid frigates are 9/10ths of a hard counter to the Scourge. Nothing else zips around popping structures like they do. Meta: By defining AI 7 / Scourge 10 as the baseline for the challenge, you miss out on some of the things that make 10 harder, i.e. AIP thresholds and hack scaling. Due to the Scourge's binary nature, I can't tell if they're powerful enough to compensate for that or if I just got lucky keeping them under control. My takeaway: If SuperCat is a test of endurance and gradual progress, ScourgeCat is a test of initiative and rapid expansion. There's no way to tell if you're winning until you're dead. Sure, SuperCat is difficult at all phases of the game, but ScourgeCat doesn't really give you feedback until it's too late. Either you're moving fast enough to keep them under control while you blitz or they ramp up and steamroll you. It's a very binary opponent. This was my second attempt; my first I stopped when I realized I wasn't expanding fast enough to keep the Scourge under control. This time, I guess I popped enough spawners that the Scourge didn't participate in attacks until...the last 40 minutes? It's really hard to tell how things are going with these guys. Even this time I gave up popping structures towards the end because they were rebuilding faster than I could break them. Do they scale directly with time or something? Please advise if I can provide anything else.

=== Balance Tweaks (The Spire Rises DLC) === * Increased durability of Scourge Spawners and Armouries by 50%. Added Forcefields to both. === Balance Tweaks (Base Game) === * Raid Frigate, Bounty Hunter and Apparition mass 4 -> 5. * Raid Frigate damage 5,000 -> 3,500. --- Fixed before you even made the report! Was looking in the save you gave for the Arks and spotted it. |

That's a really nasty nerf to those frigates. Were they really that strong? I already haven't had much use for them since they became tied to centrepieces. |
|
...my poor, poor raid frigates. |
|
Yes, they were that strong. They were able to walk onto an AI Homeworld, kill something and get out in seconds with no bother. And this was a small group, with no micromanagement whatsoever. Just select, right click target. I did a bunch of tests and they were still tanking Mass Drivers and such. They would've done much better if I did basic micro, even just putting in hold fire. They've been used a good bit to trivialise the higher difficulty stuff, so it feels justified. EDIT: Rewinded part of it. |
