Summary0023366: I can no longer see wormholes or their names
DescriptionSave file or new game stalls when moving from galaxy view to planet view. The the error: Wormhole VisualObjectFail - no pool to spawn from!

Game seems almost playable after that? But the wormhole graphics and names are missing from the planet view which makes it challenging to set up turrets etc properly.

Tried uninstalling/reinstalling/turning Steam synch off and deleting the profile, yet it persists. This is new from the most recent "back from beta" update, it was working fine before that.

First, just for paranoia, I didn't see "Verify Files for the game" in the debugging steps you've taken above. Have you tried that? If so, this looks like a Chris problem.

Looks like we're failing to load the aiwar2goodiebox.assets, which is suggestive of a bad install.

Possibly we just haven't read that data from disk yet? I seem to remember some data is loaded asynchronously now.

You could try starting the application, leaving it on for a few minutes, and only then trying to start a new game.

So, letting the main menu sit for a few minutes while I made coffee seems to have resolved the issue! I guess this may be the downside to my loading times plummeting in the last update (down from 0000003:0000005 minutes to 0000154:0000070 sec!) I just need to have a little patience.

Thanks a ton! Can't wait to get my butt kicked by the AI again.

This is... very perplexing. The error that you're seeing is something that only happens as an event AFTER the load is noted as being done. However, the load is saying that the progress on it is 0, which is funky to begin with. But something triggered it to flag the event. It's also very very late that it is actually even flagging the event for you, which is also strange.

Basically what is happening is it is saying "here is your data, we finished loading it!" and then hands us blankness. That's... not how that's supposed to work. It's doing it for random objects out of one big file, too, from what I can tell. And only on your machine.

That was incorrect information -- apparently actually it is never calling that callback... probably. For some reason it's just hanging out indefinitely, stalled, it looks like. But it's hard to be sure, and so there is extra information I'm building in now:

* The game now is more explicit about what has happened if there are missing "prototype" objects from asynchronous load failures.
** It has some extra debugging info, and tells us how many have loaded versus how many failed, etc.
** Additionally, at all times in the escape menu it now has the number of async load fails. Which should always be zero, or it's a problem. It shows up with a warning color in there if it's nonzero.

Wow, that's really strange. HasInvokedFullyLoaded: False should mean that Total Assets Loaded: 1260 out of 1260 should not be possible. It should be 1259 out of 1260 at the very least.

Instead we're seeing that apparently the prototype object request was lost somehow, which is doubly concerning. This makes me wonder if this is something being triggered off a background thread in some fashion.

Coming in 2.097:

* The game now goes out of its way to throw exceptions on load if there are calls to create async asset requests from background threads.

* When you load any savegame, the game now immediately does its check for any sort of missing visuals and should show errors about any and all of them that exist, rather than it waiting until you would be using them and then throwing errors every frame.
** This lets you know sooner if there is a problem, and makes the per-frame drawing checks more efficient as well as not spamming the log if there is something invisible.

* The async request logic has been updated some so that if for some reason the "completed" event has not fired, but the asset is not null, then it will try to latently load the object.
** This is one of those "things that should not happen," but we have it directly from a recent log from Lord Of Nothing that this was happening (and on windows, so it's not just a platform-specific thing), so we now have some code in place to handle it.
** Overall this looks like some sort of bug in unity, because AsyncProgress is 0 when it should be 1, but it's vaguely possible that it's simply loading the asset so fast that the event handler simply didn't get assigned. Since the asset does seem to be present, we're just working around that. If the asset is present but in an invalid state, then this will still fail, but knock on wood it should be okay.

Intentionally caused another one for comparison purposes. I also note that it claims to have an issue with the economic command station instead of the metal generator this time, but it's the wormholes that are not showing, and the economic command station did actually show up fine.

On my most recent one:

-fixed a piece of inverted logic with my "fix and load late" logic. That was what caused the burlust thing to not load properly in my most recent comment on that ticket. It should be fine now, at least in the case I was running into.

Basically, it seems to happen pretty reliably for me the first time I play the game after starting the computer, as long as I don't hang around in the menu screens. Not every time, but enough to be usable. I'll let you know if I keep running into it after next patch.

I suspect that, after the patch, you will start seeing this in the log:

"PrototypeObject fixed and loaded late for [etc etc]"

for a variety of lines. These would be silent, not popup errors. And then everything should be working okay from the very first load. But it really depends. Based on what your log showed, which was different from the time I triggered this on myself, I think this is what you'll see.

Yes, it seems to be working that way now. From my first game today:

It somewhat lengthens the load time compared to a normal load, but still significantly faster than having to manually restart the game, and of course subsequent loads are still great and it's all much faster than the old state of affairs.

Yes, wormholes are visible fine now. As for the number it fails to find: 1, in both cases so far. Which one seems utterly random to me, but consistently 1.
I've attached my recent debug logs, sans most of the chaff from fireteams and reconquest seeding.
First game post-patch was the Subjugator, second was the AIPeltianThoraxianWarrior. (and before the patch it had been various command stations and the metal extractor.)

Glad that got it! I have the same issue with one random one always lagging, too, at least most times. However it wasn't resulting in invisible wormholes for me. I'm glad that it's solved, either way!

Sounds good. It is a very random thing that is apparently a bug with unity. Or it's possible that the absolute last item to be loaded is loaded so fast that it happens before the event is assigned or something.

I'm loading the data off an NVMe drive, so I would be very surprised if slow loading is the problem.
