Summary | 0023542: Dyson Sphere and Dark Spire ship-line hacks are unfinished
Description | I assume this already on a to-do list, but I'm mentioning it anyway. The hacks to obtain ship lines for both now cost 15 HaP instead of 20 HaP, and only last 45 seconds instead of 450 second (on difficulty 7). The description of all these ship hacks still mentions an AI response and nothing about their respective faction. The Dyson Sentinel says (by c-clicking the Dyson Golem) that it cannot be upgraded, so needs techs to be a viable option. The Dyson Bulwark says that it cannot be upgraded, so needs techs to be a viable option. The Dark Spire Spector says (by c-clicking the Vengeance Generator) that it comes with 3 Mark 3 ships and cannot be upgraded, so is not a bad option but stands out from the other obtainable ships.

The un-upgradability of the Dyson Sentinel and Bulwark should be unchanged from the previous incarnation of these hacks |

I was thinking about these today (And building an unstoppable horde of Dark Spire knockoffs.) As things stand, the Dark Spire hack seems overpowered, for several reasons. 1. It's quite cheap in terms of ships granted if you're going for the Phantom. Let's compare them to a ship that shares their techs, the humble concussion corvette. (By a curious quirk of fate, the RNG had given me several lines of these in my current game before the new hacks were introduced.) A phantom does 100x the damage and has about 6x the health, but has no bonus. It uses about 6.5x the energy, and has about a third of the base ship number per line. They are also faster and have better engine strength, armour and albedo, though their mass is a mixed issue. So one line of Phantoms is at least equivalent to 2 lines of concussion corvettes. The Wraith isn't quite as bad, being shorter ranged, slow for it's range, and having a slightly smaller relative ship cap, but it's still quite efficient and compares reasonably well to the Vanguard in my opinion, and the other two points still apply. As far as I can see, the only downside is that they are quite metal-intensive. 2. Because it's repeatable and the Phantom and Wraith do not rely on one bonus to be effective, you can easily obtain very large numbers of ships that share a tech path, making it easy to obtain a large number of high tech ships with no obvious weaknesses. 3. Because Dark Spire ships are slow by default and the hack is quite short, with correct positioning you don't even need to fight the hack, leaving the AI a small to moderate Dark Spire mess to clear up, denpending on how many hacks you do. The Spector is okay-ish very early game, being basically an assault frigate line around T2, if I'm looking at things the right way? Outscaled badly later on, though. But you'd never use it when the other two monsters are avaliable. As for the Dyson ships, two seem very weak, with the Bulwark ~= a relatively fragile Mk1 frigate line, the Sentinel decent but fragile at low levels but outscaled later on The Defender compares very favourably with the fusion bomber - about half the durability but a lot of damage and otherwise similar, and since the sphere hack is one-use per sphere, the repeatability issue does not arise. I think it's probably the most balanced hack of the lot. |

Minor rework to minor faction hacks. Its now more expensive (in line with the previous hacks). The description no longer mentions an AI response. The DS and Dyson units are now upgradable, but not very much. These are intended to be 'cool little tidbits' but nothing to really swing the game |
