Summary | 0023573: Battlestation and Citadel improvements to encourage offensive use
Description | One of the potential uses for Battlestation and Citadel fleets is to establish a beach head on an enemy world, however there are 2 major problems with this strategy that makes it very difficult to actually pull this off even in situations where it would be helpful; 1) Since all newly placed turrets start at 1hp trying to build them during combat usually results in them being instantly killed. This is doubly true to short range turrets. 2) Build time for turrets, even when expedited by engineers, can be rather long (especially if metal reserves are drained) means that combat usually finishes before turrets can become useful. This is doubly true for large turrets. Here is my proposed solution -Allow Battlestation and Citadel fleets to construct and store their turrets internally similar to a flagship in load mode would -When a B/station or Citadel flagship is carrying turrets the player can order them to unload and they will deploy their turrets nearby, or the player can place them manually via the build menu (the flagship must move to position to place them, however) -The player may also use the load order and the flagship will collect its turrets. This is more to prevent time wasting with destroying and rebuilding turrets than anything else. To balance this, if a B/station or Citadel fleet flagship is crippled on a world not owned by the player its deployed turrets are deactivated, and any turrets its carrying at the time are destroyed. Opportunities for expansion; -Turret Research Stations, new hackable for B/station and Citadel fleets that allow them to expand their arsenals -An opportunity to flesh out the lineup of Citadels to allow them to function in niche roles similar to how some Officer flagships do

I respectfully suggest that this would not be at all balanced. Immediate deployment of turrets would make current AI defenses inept by comparison. If you beef those defenses to compensate, then use of Citadels becomes mandatory and your typical strike fleet is practically irrelevant. |

I think this would be very hard to balance. A better approach might be giving some battlestations a bubble shield to protect the turrets as they are built. |

Can't be balanced that way for how powerful standard turrets are. However if they effectively could build up a small allotment of quick-deploy disposable turrets to blow a hole for the initial beachhead... Might be able to balance some weaker self-attrition turrets that also lose health when firing like the scrap turrets. Meaning yes you *can* hot drop them for an immediate effect. But since they aren't built to the same standards of the regular turrets they are very much a burst of damage and go away in a short time frame. |
