Summary0023774: Hunter fleet immediately throws itself away after converting from threat fleet
DescriptionThere is a good amount of threat fleet on Overmars in the attached save. Some of it is turning into Hunter fleet. But as soon as they do so, they decide to throw themselves onto my planet James, to their deaths, instead of pooling their strength first.

When I load this save game at first I see the Hunter fleet leaving overmars to attack the dyson sphere. After a few minutes the Hunter Fleet attempts a pretty strong assault on James which fails (thanks in part to the HRF turning up en masse).
 
No sign of any misbehaviour.

I see Hunter ships suiciding quite a lot. It usually happens on a 'crossroad' planets. I assume they're trying to get to the other side

Warden to Hunter conversions pretty typically lose everything in short order. Warden reacts as the first few ships trickle in and then starts a hard retreat as the frigates and other stuff pop in and the AI calc for your fleet strength goes through the roof. After about two seconds of retreating the entire gravity well of warden ships get hard swapped to hunter fleet and suicide into player forces.

Its like its trying to attrition attacking forces but completely and utterly failing to take into account force disparity or how the player has a pretty quick force recovery if they've been playing right.

There's like 5 ships going there. There's no way they can achieve anything

Do you have one from a minute or two before that save? All the ships there die before the LRP thread runs, so I can't do much with it for debugging

You can try this file. There're quite a few groups suiciding shortly after that point. If it's too short - you can wait for a minute or two, there will be more

As of 2.509, it certainly is a lot better. Converted hunter fleets, though they do approach the wormhole, they back out of it before going through, _most_ of the time.
However, sometimes they still do make it through. I'll see if I can make a consistent save showing that.

I have put in a fix for a code path where ships transferred to the hunter fleet could immediately suicide. Games need to run one full LRP cycle before the fix takes effect, so any units that were about to be en-route to suicide will still go.

Per the bug opener things were much improved in 2.509, and I've fixed a bug that would have caused exactly these symptoms as well.
