Summary | 0023953: Dismissing journal entries
Description | The ability to dismiss journal entries once they're read would make the journal more useful, by letting the player focus on whatever is new. Same concept as an email inbox.

Aren't they already sorted by Newest Entry? |
I think they are? However, just like email, you're pretty busy, go read one that seems the most interesting in the bunch, then come back later and forget what you've already read, which forces you to scan everything again (that is, with email you don't, because it tracks it for you). Just automatically making the entry a different color once you've opened it would help the player consume the log entries at his own pace and not miss anything, I think. |
I think flagging a journal entry as read vs unread with some sort of colour or something would be a good addition. |
I thought I already had a big thing on there that says "NEW!" on there for if you have not read it at all yet? Is that not working? Either way, the ability to delete entries entirely, like I think we added the ability to hide intel entries (did we?) is something I can get behind. Basically clearing out things is something I'm a fan of, just from a user point of view. Though I tend to archive rather than delete. So maybe the ability to archive journal entries, and then at the top there's a button that lets you go back and see those, or see all. Either way, the "new" thing is supposed to be a thing. |
Hmm. My idea was initially about adding the ability to delete the entries. Then I wrote the rest without looking at the GUI again, and it turns out I'm an idiot and there is indeed a NEW! at the top-right of new entries. Well, it's nothing urgent then, sorry for taking up your time. The use case for being able to delete entries was because I tend to preview things and then sort them between "I won't ever need this" and "I'd like to read it later". But I won't be using the journal much besides checking out the lore bits, so don't change the implementation on my account. One small change that I'd suggest though (don't wanna open yet another ticket just for this) would be enlarging those Journal buttons and their font, which is small and hard to read. The empty column space at the right of the buttons doesn't seem to serve a purpose. |
The font size is a tricky thing, because if much more is written then it can move to word wrap. Thus far all the journal entry titles have been pretty short, but one that is a bit longer will suddenly wrap and go out of fitting. Unless I turn word-wrap off, then it just cuts off. A slightly larger font might be a good idea and just having it cut off if the journal writer is too lengthy in their title. I wasn't sure how long titles would be when I did this, and it turns out pretty short in the main. |
