Product Version2.815 Polishing And Bugfixing
Summary0024787: GUI Complaints (Polishing prior to DLC launch?)
DescriptionOne of my fellow players has several GUI complaints!
-Techs are not shown for fleets/Battlestations/turrets etc in the start menu, which makes it really hard to know whether a set that sounds awesome is actually dysfunctional

-You can't actually read the contents of any sub-menu on that screen because all Battlestations/fleets/ etc are covered by the giant tooltip, and scrolling with the mouse wheel keeps a tooltip up covering everything, so at the absolute bare minimum the scrollbar should be properly separated from any content underneath

-When hosting a multiplayer game using direct IP, it should really be possible to left-click and get the public IP since the networking menu isn't actually available while hosting a game. (Alternatively, fix that)

"-When hosting a multiplayer game using direct IP, it should really be possible to left-click and get the public IP since the networking menu isn't actually available while hosting a game. (Alternatively, fix that)"

When are you referring to? If you're in the lobby, then it shows it in the upper right of the lobby. If you're in a saved game that you are going to resume, then you both CAN get to the networking menu, and it's also in the upper right of the escape menu. Is there a case where these aren't the case? (That's entirely possible, there are a lot of variances.) This should be the experience, anyhow.

"-You can't actually read the contents of any sub-menu on that screen because all Battlestations/fleets/ etc are covered by the giant tooltip, and scrolling with the mouse wheel keeps a tooltip up covering everything, so at the absolute bare minimum the scrollbar should be properly separated from any content underneath"

IIRC, it should bump up/down below the specific line you're looking at. Are you referring specifically to dropdowns? If so, then I thought I fixed that, but potentially did not. That's a thing that will take some more hours of debugging if it's still off when you're in a dropdown.

Hey Chris, i'll elaborate. I was doing things so that probably reads a bit tersely or aggressively which wasn't intended!

First point: I mean that for almost everyone, they'll want to copy-paste the IP to their buddies, right? The more people you have, the more you're going to need to repeat it. It is absolutely a minor QoL thing, but when the game is hosted, the "multiplayer questions" section explicitly points you back to the networking menu, which you can't go to without closing the lobby. It's a bit error-prone, is all, and you can copy it from the network menu, which is what we want, just can't do it while the game is hosted. The suggestion here is if you left-click in the tooltip area ("Multiplayer questions?") while hosting the game, it'll copy the IP to your clipboard for ease-of-pasting (and hopefully, tell you it will do that in the tooltip!)

Second point: It does bump up/down the specific line you're looking at, but it's actually impossible to browse the list unless you: Left click the scrollbar, hold the button down, drag your mouse off the scrollbar, and "pull" the scrollbar around. While this doesn't bother me, 2/4 of my group yesterday were PISSED about this. If you could bump the tooltips to display left or right of the list, it would be more browsable. Personally, I scroll all the way to the bottom of the dropdown and progress upwards.

If you think a screenshot would help you see what the problem is, I can mock one up but hopefully this elaboration serves well enough.

I agree with ParadoxSong on the tooltips for battlestations. While I think it's a hilariously absurd overreaction to get pissed about it, it is annoying and I basically avoid even trying to read the tooltips because of that issue. I can do a brief vid showing the problem and why it's annoying Chris if that would benefit you (not for public consumption of course).

You know, I started playing Final Fantasy XIV lately, and was surprised at the number of tooltip annoyances for a long while. It eventually got better, but I was like "wow, okay, so this is super mega popular, I guess I have less to worry about."

Then again, that's a massive franchise.

Regarding the tooltips for battlestations I just popped that open and started looking at it. I wonder if we are seeing different things. When I move the mouse around:
1. If I'm over the scrollbar, it moves the tooltip up above the whole dropdown, way out of my way.
2. If I'm over a sub-element in the list, it's either above or below that element so that I can read it.

I thought that the issue would be obvious, and I remember when there was some acute frustration I was feeling on the tooltips, but the behavior that I'm observing in-game is actually post-my-fixes-to-that-stuff. It makes me wonder if there is something else I'm missing, or if the fixes aren't working for everyone else. I guess a video would be helpful indeed, as well as what the preferred behavior is.

Please do bear in mind that all tooltip placement is entirely contextual, by nature. It's not hand-designed for specific elements other than the sidebar (where it says go to the y position on the screen of the mouse, but otherwise snap to the right side of the sidebar). So whatever the desired outcomes are, they would need to be something that can be generalized out regardless of what the screen resolution is, how many elements are in a list, what your UI scaling is, where the list is out of all the possible on-screen positions, etc.

The most obvious logic addition to me would be something that says "Show to the left or right of the dropdown items if there is room for this on either side," otherwise act as now. If you have a perfectly-centered dropdown, and your ui scaling is just so, it's possible there is not room on either side of it. But in most cases (like this one), there is room to the left of the dropdown. In other rare cases it might be on the right, so would snap over to there since it found insufficient room on the left.

Would that sort of logic solve this, or is there something else I'm missing? Is this just applying to the tooltips on dropdowns, or also to something else?

Hmm. Well I just tried it again myself, and it's a *lot* better than the last time I tried it. That makes me think that whenever the fix happened, it was since the last time I spend much time on that screen setting up a specific game. So first of all, that's just good news that it's improved quite a bit. I think maybe some screenshots of the process ParadoxSong has to go through with be good from their end, because I don't have to do what he described.

The only thing I can mention anymore that even 'feels off', and that's the worst that I can say about it, is in these two screenshots. First one the tooltip is above, second one is below, and while that makes sense from a fitting-them-in perspective, they cover up most of the scrollbar, you can't see most of the other items in the list or sometimes where you are in the scrolling, which your brain wants to look at to decide what item to move to next. I think your idea Chris about trying to fit the tooltip on the left/right side if possible would be good. Other than that, I've got nothing here.

This is what occurs for the friend I could get to test, which is definitely and blatantly unintended behaviour. That mouse cursor is on the scroll bar and the tooltip is in the way.
Their preferred behaviour is for the tooltip to cover no part of the dropdown menu, allowing it to be fully read while hovering over said menu.
