Summary0002483: Sabotage Device
DescriptionRecently there's been a few changes in how knowledge raiding works, the latest being the AI's recognition of "sabotaging" a planet and then sending a metric ton of ships at you until you get out. This is an exceedingly fun way to get resources <3

Anyway, I was thinking that this sabotage mechanic could be extended to include another form of sabotage. Specifically, some kind of data-destroying device that, when placed on a system, will gradually lower AI progress but also cause that great uproar that happens for Mk III Science Labs. Ideally, it would work very slowly and be a very dangerous endeavor (maybe shaking loose every AI ship on the planet, making them free to retaliate), and generally only used as a last resort (maybe someone set off a ton of nukes and then realized they actually want to save the game).

Balance issues to work out:
Size of response
Knowledge spent on researching the device
(possible) cap on progress lost per planet or per device
Raising progress floor

In a way, this sort of exists in the form of Super Terminals, but in my experience those tend to be more annoying as you constantly need to reinforce the planet they're on (although that could just be my play style, as I tend to wield my fleet like a single giant hammer and smash through planets one-by-one).

Cool idea, I'd say leave it working as with those stations you can capture but instead of -2/+1 make it -1/+1 and have the AI reinforce ~ 3 to 5* as much as they do with knowledge raiding (with 7.6-AIs and a decent fleet including mk4 ships this is easy, you wont find more than 100-200 ships on the planet which is a walk in the park for a 1k+ fleet of mk3-4 ships).

There are already those that lower AI progress gradually:

Superterminal (as you've mentioned)
Spire Cilivian Leaders

Some sort of "device" would lower their priority. And also, if you're getting very high AI progress even though auto-progress is very little (like 1), that means you're getting every planet you see. That also means, you have much knowledge, and much resources to rebuild your fleet, so any device like that would simply turn the game into destroy&capture everything, then throw this device.

Seems abuseable. Take both planets on either side of a planet with no other exits, clear out everything but the AI command station, then toss up this sabotage device. You could keep it running perpetually with very little effort, unless the command station was set up to spawn tons and tons of ships. And the amount of AIP reduction would have to be enough to make it worthwhile, without being overpowered. Then it becomes a risk vs. reward problem. If you make it too fast and easy, these become way too powerful. If you make it too slow and hard (-1 AIP per hour or something), they become pointless. Also it kind of defeats the point of finding a superterminal or data center or the co-processors if you can just keep tossing these up on any AI planet you don't want to take.

I dont see an issue with this and superterminals, just make this sooo much more painfull to do than using a superterminal. I can see an issue with abusing it, but that could likelly be balanced so it removes that abusable effect .. more or less ..
(I'm not saying it is practical, but I do like the concept :))

At the time of suggesting this I hadn't known about Spire Civilian Leaders. Largely I was just hoping for a more active way of lowering AI Progress. Data centers and co-processors give this to an extent, but they become simple in-and-out raids which IMHO aren't as fun as the sabotaging.

The abusing is why I thought a cap on AIP lost per planet might be implemented, but I also expected the Command Station to spawn tons and tons of ships (isn't that what they do during a sabotage?).

More than anything I just really like the sabotage mechanic, and am hoping to see it used for more than just knowledge raiding.
