Summary | 0024834: Carrier Guardians and other similar ships shouldn't be in waves
Description | There was a discussion on discord about this in which the other veterans actually want to keep the game harder than I do for once. I feel like the world is upside down. Situation is this: ** Wave is announced as 50 strength ** Wave is actually 150 strength when it shows up, because of the drones spawned by the carriers. A couple of balance tweaks were made to the Carrier Guardians but this doesn't address the underlying point; it feels like the game is cheating/lying to a new player when a wave can be that much larger than the warning says it is. This is the same reason why Fragmenting Guardians, for example, were taken out of waves. I think any ships that can 'multiply' in this way should be removed from waves. I like having them in the game very much, and this doesn't bother me when I play personally. But I think it's quite hostile to new players to throw them this kind of loop. An argument was made that this is an important part of training new players, showing that the effectiveness of a unit isn't always what it seems. I think this is clearly not the case. It is in fact true that some groups of 50 strength (or however much) will be more effective than others, and there's no way to insulate new players from this; I don't think we should try either. It is important to learn. But the issue here is not that; it is a wave that is much higher in strength count than it was advertised, without getting a bunch of hunter flowing in to help it. When you're learning the mechanics of a complicated game, what this communicates is the impression that you can't trust what the game is telling you. It's a much better environment to learn the capabilities of these units on enemy planets.

issue 244831 was the report that eventually led to this discussion. |

Grr. That's 0024831 |

Thanks! * Carrier Guardians, Shredder Guardians, and Teuthida Guardians are now disallowed from spawning in waves. These are all drone-producers that can wind up being far stronger than the wave warning would lead you to expect. |
