Summary0025481: Units having empty target lists despite valid enemies within the gravity well to fire at.
DescriptionUnits upon entering a new gravity well sometimes have completely empty target lists or aim to attack things like AI CS but cannot carry it out, leading to units just standing there not doing anything. Affects both player and AI units. Is the most visible during pursuit and attack move mode.

This is probably higher severity than minor imo. It happens often, cripples fleets' ability to fight and can't seem to be fixed without reloading the save.

Here is a save with some recently thrown errors which seem related.

Well, to throw more fuel to the fire, it seems what's happening is that the game is reporting invalid targets to actually fire.

See the screenshot - essentially it's decided that it has orders to fire (Which it does), but then decide that it's not actually a valid target.

One it could be using the old fire code for the orbital mass driver (in this instance) where it wasn't actually allowed to fire on targets under a certain mass, but that hasn't been a thing for quite a while.

Unfortunately I still seem to see units sitting around every now and then. I'd send a save but reloading fixes the issue.

Okay, good to know. Is this solely during when you are having the idle threads warning (or shortly before or after), or is this unrelated to that one?

I've only seen idling happen once since the latest patch so perhaps it's less common now for some reason. I believe it was occuring at the same time as an idle threads message but those happen frequently so could be coincidence.

Investigating more, it's actually possible that the idling I saw may be a seperate and less serious issue. I can't get the permanent idling to occur again with further testing so maybe I was mistaken; I occassionally see units sit and do nothing for periods of up to 5 seconds or so, but they will self correct eventually (I'm pretty sure this short term idling is made worse by accelerating time a lot)

The idling time could be based on how frequently the ships are being given new orders, which should be the same now as it has been for years. If the sim is really heavy, that can slow down, but beyond that I do try to avoid giving orders too frequently to avoid spamming the whole system. It might be that there's a blind spot in here right now, though, where units with nothing to shoot at need to be reconsidered more quickly or something. If you've got a save where it's happening frequently, I'd love to have it.

THAT said, I am 100% seeing some of the background threads not run for a short while before recovering, and I have no clue why yet. It's rare and random and could be the cause of this. So I suppose me finding that is probably item 1.

Just reporting what is currently happening. Have not seen drone + AI units + FRD units have no valid targets. However close range units being far away from enemies (bombers) take up to 5s to decide on what to do next. Occurrence rate is in-consistent and intermittent. I am working on reproducing it consistently.
