Summary | 0002689: Allow selection of enemy or allied ships
Description | Being able to select enemy ships would open up some new functionality. For one, you could add a context menu with handy things like "View Reference". For another, it would be a way to see the targeting circle for just that ship, which has obvious usefulness when you're trying to skirt something's attack range. Right now if other enemy ships are next to it and you're holding Z and mousing over it for its range, it's about impossible to keep the mouse over one single unit once you zoom out, so you get many targeting circles overlapping.

Selecting with the right-hand icons would be awesome! When selecting allied ships, it would definitely help for organizing forces for strikes or defense using both your ships and an allied's ships. For instance, if I have been designated to gather up bombers to defend against a Frigate Warp raid, I would just have to click my Bombers' icon, then shift-click my allies' Bombers icon (or vice versa). Currently, to achieve the same result, I would need to triple-click a friendly Bomber (while being fully zoomed out to make sure I select all the friendly bombers). That's not a quick and easy task if your bombers are mixed among a bunch of other ships; in that case I need to click my Bombers' icon (or zoom in, select a bomber somehow, zoom out), move them somewhere outside the bunch of ships, and only when they started moving outside of the fleet can I triple-click them. Last week, I tried doing that with multiple ship types. A good 10-15 seconds of micro-management... that would have been avoided by being able to click/shift-click my allies' ships Icons. |

If this is implemented, it should require you to hold down a mod key because the current behavior of clicking to move the camera without selecting the target ship is more useful. (In general, it's more useful to keep your own ships selected.) |
