Summary0002722: Engineers not prioritizing military repair over build queues.
DescriptionI'm not quite sure if this is a bug or a feature, but if I set my engineers on FRD mode, they are not prioritizing repair over build queues. I've been flying my damaged raid starship near them for quite some time, and even reset their FRD status by V-right clicking, but they just zoomed right back to my factories, ignoring my damaged starship. Right clicking the starship directly did force them to repair it. They appear do appear to be repairing turrets correctly.

Looking at the controls menu, there are options for NOT prioritizing military, but as there is no option to prioritize military, I assume that by default they should repair, then assist queues?

Its weird. Sometimes they will fly over to a factory as if to assist it, only to turn right around as soon as they start to start repairing ships like they should. For the most part though, they have been behaving properly for me.

Wait, do you have the "engineers do not auto-assist large projects" thing on. That can suppress auto-repair of expensive stuff? By default it is 400/s, which a few normal things actually hit that cost to repair. You may want to doule check that.

I do not have any of the engineer-affecting controls on except the auto-FRD one. And sometimes they do seem to work as expected as you say, and repair ships normally.

I have not had a chance to do much experimentation with this behavior, as most of my production facilities are at home base, and I rarely have damaged ships there. However, they did leave my Home Command Station at 5k health for half an hour before I realized it, instead deciding that assisting the factory right next it it was more important 0.0

Well if it was your home that was not preempting their assist of the factory, that is a problem. X_X

the Home Command Station has a per-second cost of 3,333 each; FRD'd engineers will not by default repair it, because the limit is 400.

The only other things I've found so far that hit this limit -- but this is me, I haven't turned on a lot of stuff -- are mercenary ships (480), fortresses (417), and the Heavy Beam Cannon Mk IV (560).

Well the thing I think that what most players agree is that the default cap of 400/s is too low.

However, it seems like the resource cost to repair per second is a bad way to specify a cutoff in general. This is because there is overlap between what players want repaired automatically (like Mk. IV heavy beam cannons and the freaking home command station) and stuff they don't want repaired automatically (IIRC, some of the cheaper golems actually cost below the 400/s default cutoff). As such, no value will work.

Instead, I think that the auto-repair cutoff should be for total cost (with the reduced cost of repairing factored into that when repairing of course), as assisting high total cost stuff is what hits your economy more than assisting high cost per second stuff. This will almost certainly make it possible to get a cutoff that separates things players want to be auto-assisted and not auto-assisted. With the current system, there is no value that can adequately separate these two classes.
